Dom Bess spends some time trying to get his man in the deep to come up, and Joe Root eventually relents.
It works, too, as Mark Wood cuts off two deliveries to keep new man Babar Azam on strike.

This is the sort of pitch where you can bowl people out. When it starts to go for Broad and Anderson they are capable of bowling them out by tea. They don't want to be giving them much of a lead.

Babar Azam is the new man at the crease. He sees off James Anderson's final ball.

Every ball Anderson has bowled from the Nursery End has been full, bringing the batsman forward, where from the Pavilion End they were short and wide. That's why I would have taken him off after two overs.
Azhar lbw Anderson 50 (Pak 119-3)
The change of ends works for James Anderson!
He gets the ball to move in and crack into Azhar Ali's front pad. A moment of deliberation for the umpire before he raises the finger. Azhar debates the review but shakes his head, and he's right to - the replay shows it would have been umpire's call, the ball hitting the top of middle stump.
A leading edge, as Asad Shafiq tries to turn James Anderson through mid-wicket, but it drops safely and they nab a single.
About 20 minutes to go until lunch. Joe Root's chucked the ball to James Anderson, who'll be having a go from the Nursery End.

Asad Shafiq wants to have a go at Dom Bess.
He comes dancing down the wicket but once again, feet and bat go awry, and the ball ends up trickling rather mournfully behind him. They nab a single.
Pak 117-2
Patience personified.
It's taken Azhar Ali 203 minutes to register his half-century. He's timed it to perfection in these conditions. He raises his pat to the Pakistan balcony, who are giving him a standing ovation.

Ben Stokes had bowled only 80 overs this year before this match, 70 of which were in the IPL and in the one-dayers in New Zealand.

Here's the one wicket from this morning session so far - Haris Sohail falling to Mark Wood on the stroke of a drinks break.
Shafiq 17, Azhar 49
Misguided from Ben Stokes, drifting the ball down the leg side, and Asad Shafiq tickles it fine for four. Stokes knew that was wrong the second it came out of his hand.

There have been two 20-year-old spinners picked for England this year, the youngest since 19-year-old Ian Peebles in 1927.
Ooh! Azhar Ali gets himself into a bit of a tangle, trying to come down to the wicket to Dom Bes and getting his bat and feet into a right palava.
Now an attempt at a paddle sweep! Again, it's messy, the ball hanging in the air, while Asad Shafiq sets off for a single and realises at the last second that his mate isn't coming. The pair recover, and work two singles here and there.
Time for Dom Bess, who got one over at the end of yesterday's evening.

Coming round the wicket banging the ball in has not really worked. They have got to come over the wicket and look to bowl in the channel. I don't mind the tactic for a couple overs if nothing is happening but there is plenty in this pitch.
I don't really see a rhythm in Stokes, he has bowled down the leg side and bowled short too.

Shot! A full-blooded cut from Azhar Ali, head leaning slightly back, and Ben Stokes watches his first ball of the new over go haring away for four.
Stokes goes short once again, and Azhar softy turns the ball away from his body for one. The final ball of the over is better, though, and Asad Shafiq can't help but have a little tickle at it.

Root shouldn't be at short leg. He can't see enough of the game, what the batsmen are doing, where the bowlers are going, who's loitering in the field. Bad captaincy.

A Mark Wood delivery rises up towards Azhar Ali's ribs, but he watches it all the way and drops his hands down to steer a single past Joe Root at short leg.
A little overpitched, and Asad Shafiq pushes the ball back down the ground for another couple of runs.
