It's generally the rule that when you're not getting the shape or movement you would expect, you go searching for a change of ball. The problem is that if Pakistan are still only one down when Dom Bess comes on, they really will target the spinner.

  2. Pak 84-1published at 33 overs

The umpire is checking the ball for the second time in a few overs. Joe Root reckons it's been knocked out of shape. It, er, hasn't.

A bouncer from Mark Wood comes whistling down to Haris Sohail, but he ducks it with ease. A jogged single is the only run from the over.

Joe Root has decided that he no longer wants to skipper from second slip. The first year of his reign as captain was spent in the cordon, but now he has stationed himself at mid-off. Dawid Malan is now at two, Ben Stokes at three. That new combo was involved in the drop of Haris Sohail last evening.

We did some maths (read: adding up) on that subject yesterday, Stuart.

Pakistan's XI in this match have played 126 days of first-class cricket between them this summer.

    England's combined XI? 82 days.

Stuart Foster: England seem less prepared for this series than the previous two. How is that possible? Pakistan are a much more professional outfit.

  6. Pak 80-1published at 31 overs

    Azhar 34, Sohail 35

Purrs of appreciation around Lord's as Azhar Ali waits for Mark Wood, and dispatches him for an exquisite, cover-driven four.

That's the one you'd frame for the wall. A genuine work of art.

It's clear Jimmy Anderson has got no rhythm from the Pavilion End, he might have a go from the Nursery End. He bowled too short to start with and then too full. England are certainly not getting the zip we saw from Pakistan. Broad has been the pick of the four bowlers.

  8. Pak 76-1published at 30.2 overs

Mark Wood's got a big bit of strapping on that troublesome knee, as he comes steaming in and watches a leggy first ball get pushed disdainfully away for a single.

Now that's better! A slightly fuller length from Wood and he squares Azhar Ali up. There's a hint of a noise, but it's bat on pad, which Jonny Bairstow quietly explains to his overexcited captain.

England have got to stay patient. When you haven't got a big score you feel you've got to get everything twice as quickly.

James Anderson's off for a bit - it'll be Mark Wood from the Pavilion End.

    Azhar 30, Sohail 34

That's an absolute beauty from Stuart Broad, wobbling his final delivery past Azhar Ali as he drags his bat out of the way.

And that'll be another bruise for Jonny Bairstow, too, as the ball bashes into the top of his finger.

There's a difference between pitching it up and floating it up. Sometimes the bowlers just sort of put it there - you've still got to bowl it into the pitch.

Four more! This time it's Azhar Ali getting in on the act, lacing a wide delivery from Stuart Broad through the covers. Woof.

A delicate little steer off the pads adds another couple to the total. The camera pans to James Anderson, who looks quite like he'd like to shout at something or someone.

That last boundary brought up a very patient fifty partnership between this pair.

Oh, shot! James Anderson sends down a half-volley, and watches it get thudded straight back past him for another boundary. An increasingly grumpy Anderson responds by digging one into Sohail's ribs.

Haris Sohail has really impressed me. He's been patient outside the off stump, made the England bowlers pitch it up a bit further and then hit it away through the off side. Great, composed batsmanship, good simple batting.

There's a brief meeting of minds going on - Anderson, Broad and Cook are huddled together, discussing something, while Root jigs around the field.

And Haris Sohail promptly thwacks the first delivery of the over through the covers for a delightful four. Probably not what they were planning for...

Francis Edwards: I would question Root more so than Ramprakash. He should lead by example and not play booming drives to a ball on a 32nd stump line. Maybe if he adapted and went out of one day mode the team would do the same. I don’t think Ramps coaches that.

  19. Pak 61-1published at 28 overs

An audible grunt from Stuart Broad as he gets up to the stumps and spears down some fuller, more testing deliveries.

There are oohs from behind the stumps as the ball jags over Azhar Ali's stumps, bat hoisted high above his head, before Jonny Bairstow calls on the doctor for a bit of pain relief.
