You can't blame the pitch - that's just a poor shot. I want to be kind but he has to blame himself. I would put my hand up and say that, if it were me.

You can't win Test matches with poor batting. Teams like Pakistan play on emotion and passion and they are up for the challenge.

    Stokes c sub (Fakhar) b Shadab 9 (Eng 104-5)

Stokes has clipped it straight to short mid-wicket. The ground is stunned. Audible gasps from all quarters. Calamity for England.

I'm going to make a request to my good lady for that incredible looking pie. Her bacon and egg pie is mighty fine, as is her mother's chicken, ham and leek. All I've got with me today is some peanuts. Amir is up to 89.9mph in the afternoon sunshine but Root calmly clips him away for a single to keep the bowling.

    Root 61, Stokes 8

Eventful as always from Stokes then. Two neatly clipped fours and a video review. England have added 63 runs in the 17 overs since lunch but two wickets have gone and they still need 79 to make Pakistan bat again.

It's impossible to see that with the naked eye. It was hit so hard and went very quickly to the fielder.

He drove at it fiercely and it flew up via the silly point's boot. But it bounced in front before it fizzed into the foot and Stokes survives.

This could compound it all for England, has Stokes fallen in freakish fashion, caught via the boot of a fielder?

The last time England lost the first Test of a summer, regardless of what month it began, was in 1995 against West Indies. In the 22 years since then England have won 16 and drawn six.

All-rounder Ben Stokes is the new man, cometh the hour etc. He's away first ball in fine style with a clip to the boundary.

I don't think, early on, Jonny is very good at left arm across. He plays firmly at the ball which means you can gate yourself, because you're pushing past your pad and leaving a gap. For me, that's not the best way to play.

  14. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 35.4 overs

    Bairstow b Amir 0 (Eng 91-4)

Only one wicket in the first innings but two in three balls for Amir, crashing through the defences of the Yorkshireman, rattling the off pole.

Sarfraz took that very low to his left. It went quickly to him. That ball has kept so low. It's a miracle, really, that it has carried, and that is a very good catch.

    Malan c Sarfraz b Amir 12 (Eng 91-3)

He's gone this time though, second ball after the drinks break. Bit of a tentative prod and it's superbly caught low to his left by the surprisingly nimble captain and wicketkeeper, who is a well-built gentleman.

I like Malan's temperament. If I could offer him a little advice, it would be to just move his wrists a little bit and manoeuvre a single around. It takes a little pressure off him.

  18. Postpublished at 14:45 British Summer Time 26 May 2018

A couple of anxious moments for Malan after lunch, notably being pinned on the helmet. Look how close the dislodged part of the lid came to the stumps, that really would have been an unfortunate way to go. There was also the ill-advised moment between the wickets, but he remains unbeaten on 12.

  19. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 35 overs

    Eng 91-2 (88 behind)

Malan takes on the sweep to Shadab and despite the spin out of the rough he gets it safely away for his first boundary. England can enjoy a drink having negotiated that first hour after lunch with no further loss.
