That foundation was rock solid. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow hit a record fifth century stand for England - more than any other English pair in ODIs.
They ended up putting on 174 to utterly dominate the Australia attack.
England centurion Jason Roy, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm feeling like I've got myself into a good routine and I'm just trying to get out there and do my job for the team.
"I'm trying to control my innings, pace it so I can set some good foundations for the end. Unfortunately I couldn't kick on today.
"I was lucky to have someone to throw that catch to so well done to the big lad Craig Overton for getting the yards in to get there."

I never played in a one-day side so confident, so blase about chasing a big total. This is even more impressive than the 481. It was so ruthless, so un-English. It was like the All Blacks.
That England's version of 'pretty solid cricket' is knocking off 311 with consummate ease shows what a brilliant ODI side they are.
What this every bit as emphatic as that record victory at Trent Bridge?
England captain Eoin Morgan, speaking to Sky Sports: "We played pretty solid cricket today. Our objective was to chase something in our grasp.
"We strulgged to take wickets, which we need to improve on, but we limited the run rate and they didn't get away from us.
"Our feedback was that the wicket was really good. Jos Buttler's judgement from keeper is really important for that and from what he said at the interval we knew that total was within our grasp.
"It's a different challenge at Old Trafford but it's a ground we've enjoyed so hopefully it goes our way if we play well."

Ajay Jacob: Meanwhile, spare a thought for the Australian cricket team. They're in a world of Paine right now.
Australia captain Tim Paine, speaking on Sky Sports: "We were 30 or 40 short in the end. We got ourselves into a good position and failed to capitalise in the last 10.
"There was a patch there when we got ourselves back in the game, unfortunately we dropped a catch and they took it away from us.
"I'm trying to enjoy it but when it rains, it pours. You have to catch those but it just popped out.
"We came here with an inexperienced side. It's not an excuse but they're the best side in the world and they are really hard to beat. We think this will hold our players in good stead for their futures."

Roy and Bairstow are a frightening prospect. You wouldn't want to be any of the bowlers at the World Cup next year, knowing you'll be faced by those two.
Jason Roy told BBC Sport: "It a great feeling. I'm happy that we got the team off to a good start. We didn't want to lose early wickets and put it on the middle order.
"I'm slightly disappointed I didn't kick on, but all-in-all I'm pretty happy.
"I knew I was a shot away and I wanted to the nerves out of the way. Me and Jonny are both positive and we want to take it at them.
"Everyone knows how we have come. I want to give a massive mention to the bowlers. 310 we weren't really worried about."
