The England batsman bends down and sweep forcefully over mid-wicket, hitting the ball just hard and flat enough to clear the ropes.
Top shot.

I don't think Paine will be captaining the one-day side after this tour. He might not be in it, either.
Target 311
Michael Neser continues to find a bit of nibble under the floodlights, keeping Joe Root honest.
Root then skips down the pitch and drives straight, with a deflection off Neser's boot not enough to slow the ball down as it evades Shaun Marsh's dive and runs away for four.
Hales would've been miles out if Neser had kicked that onto the stumps. He should've been caught out earlier in the over, mind.

It was a straightforward drop. You feel like a lot has been asked of Paine. He has done a good job off the field, but his own game has not flourished.

That was regulation for a keeper.
A tough series for Tim Paine gets even tougher.
The returning Michael Neser draws Alex Hales into nicking one behind but the Australia captain and keeper spills a dolly.
Hales 15, Root 10
Not many boundaries of late but Alex Hales sees to that, fetching a wide one from way outside off to clatter it over mid-wicket for four.
That was a slower ball gone very wrong for Marcus Stoinis and it brings the 200 up for England.
Hales rocks back to slap the last through the covers for another single.

If it's open the Chester-le-Street cricket club has a great bar. Spent many a happy hour there for the Ashes a few years back. Not far from the main cricket ground.

The height and pace of Billy Stanlake is causing Joe Root a few problems, the Aussie quick hitting a decent length and hitting the England batsman in the ribcage.
Root shrugs it off and guides the ball up and down to deep third man for a single.
So moments after England lost Jason Roy, fellow opener Jonny Bairstow departed in slight odd circumstances, hitting an attempted glance off the face of the bat straight to Tim Paine...
Hales 9, Root 7
Tidy enough from Stoinis, conceding just two from it.
England are so far ahead of the game they won't mind the odd over like that, mind.
Marcus Stoinis is back and gets his first ball to tail in slightly to Alex Hales, hitting the pads.
Big appeal but that was going a fair way down leg. Not out.
If you missed it, Jason Roy played a majestic innings to set England firmly on their way in this chase. The opener reached his second century of the series with a six...
...but he fell two balls later to this misjudged hack off Nathan Lyon...

Australia can make excuses but the simple fact is England are a better one-day team than them.
Target 311
Billy Stanlake bangs in a vicious short ball but Joe Root does well to ride the bounce, tuck it round the corner and scamper two.
Two more for the England Test captain, slicing through point. Root looking busy to start his innings.
Big Billy is busy too, getting some serious lift at serious pace, with Root yanking his head back just in time to avoid the ball.

The evolution of the England team is extraordinary. It's easy to say this isn't a strong Australia team, but it was a strong Australia team in the winter when England beat them 4-1 down under.
Hales 8, Root 2
Jhye Richardson continues and goes for the wide yorker but Alex Hales jams his bat down and gets an under edge that streaks through fine leg for four.
Well when it's not going your way...

Target 311
Joe Root is the new man in, no need to promote Jos Buttler up the order today.
He gets off the mark with a punch through point for one before Alex Hales crashes one out to deep cover for a single.
Eeek. Root edges one short of keeper and slip before playing and missing at a Stanlake snorter. Not see many, if any, beat the bat before that today.
Great over from the returning Stanlake.

That has come off the face of the bat. Bairstow was trying to get it fine and actually played it too nicely. It was good move by Paine to get Stanlake back into the attack.
