Dawid Malan has heard that collective groan from the Edgbaston crowd a lot in this Test. That's three catches he's put down at second slip in this match. When it's not going your way...

  2. Ind 16-0published at 5 overs

I really feel for Dawid Malan. Out of form with the bat, he's also dropped Virat Kohli twice in the first innings and denied England a vital early breakthrough here.

But the hosts need to think about putting their best fielders in their proper positions.

James Anderson responds by ripping yet another fine delivery past the outside edge of Murali Vijay's bat.

You have got to take Malan out of slip, I'm afraid. You have got to do the kind thing. Joe Root has taken some fabulous catches in the slips. Root has got to say, "sorry mate, I'm going to second slip."

Malan is having a stinker in that position.

  5. dropped catch

Vijay dropped on onepublished at 4.2 overs

Dawid Malan is having the most horrid Test match.

James Anderson induces the edge off Murali Vijay, it flies to Malan's right but it's a nice height and yet the Middlesex man can't hang on.

I just don't think he's up to fielding at second slip.

  6. Ind 9-0published at 4 overs

Stuart Broad nearly tempts Shikhar Dhawan to drive at one that wobbles but the India opener leaves and the ball bursts through Jonny Baistow's gloves, handing the visitors a bye.

With every run crucial, Broad snarls and stomps back to his mark.

    Andrew Samson
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

A couple of times India have been set low totals and been bowled out in recent years.

In Galle in 2015 Sri Lanka set them 176 to win and they were bowled out for 112.

Earlier this year, they needed 208 to win and South Africa bowled them out for 135.

  8. Ind 8-0published at 3 overs

    Vijay 1, Dhawan 7

Dhawan clips into leg and Broad stops it but fumbles as he tries to gather, conceding a single.

Anderson pushes it up full, tempting Vijay into the drive. He does drive twice but connects well with both, finding the fielder each time.

A short one then rushes Vijay and he just about pulls out of the flick to leg. That was quite close to the gloves.

Dhawan guides it through point for a single.

It took a while for England to swing the ball in the first innings so they won't panic if they can't produce much movement in the early stages here.

Shikhar Dhawan might have been told to go into T20 mode - break the back of it.

  13. Ind 6-0published at 1.3 overs

Broad is round the wicket to Dhawan trying to angle it in and shape the ball away.

It's not quite on line though and Dhawan drives smartly away for the first boundary of the innings. Lovely shot.

England stick to what they know - Stuart Broad will open up with James Anderson.

Can he find that full, swinging length and bowl one of *those* Broad spells?

Replays show it was pitching outside leg anyway.

Dhawan pushes into the covers for a single to get off the mark.

Mr Dar's not interested, but the crowd is.

  18. Ind 1-0published at 0.5 overs

The second ball deflects off a thick outside edge to third man and Vijay gets India on their way with a single.

James Anderson then swings it into the pads of Shikhar Dhawan.

Hearty appeal but nothing doing. That was likely sliding down leg.
