England captain Joe Root: "It was a fantastic team performance with ups and downs, but credit has to go to the bowlers from both teams.

"Coming into today, we knew it would be a stiff test and I asked the guys to come in and show a bit of passion and really give everything.

"I tried to be calm today even if I didn't appear to be, but that sort of atmosphere doesn't make it easy - that's what it's all about.

"We knew there was a lot of hard work to be done even once Virat was out, so we didn't get ahead of ourselves and we're really proud to have got over the line."

Philip: A brilliant win! Superb bowling from Stokes - real fight and aggression. Curran, too. Without his runs we'd have lost. Great start to the series.

Andy Scotson: A fabulous game and a good result for England thanks to the bowlers, with both ball and bat. But mustn't hide the fact that our approach to building an innings needs serious thought.

Vishal Verma: Finally, Virat Kohli joins the League of Legends headed by Sachin Tendulkar. Ahh! The pain of carrying the burden of expectation of the entire nation, scoring all the runs yet falling short. Well Played England on your 1000th Test.

Ben Stokes' trial for his charge of affray begins on Monday which will likely rule him out of the next Test.

Virat Kohli will have learned how to captain in these conditions now - I didn't agree with some of his decisions in the first innings, but he seemed to learn from it in the second innings.

India will come back strong at Lord's and it might be an England team without Ben Stokes.

    Well said, Virat.

  6. 'Test cricket is the best format'published at 13:11 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

More from Virat Kohli on Sky Sports: "Test match cricket is the best format in cricket and it's my favorite format in cricket. We love playing it and I'm sure every player will agree with me."

  7. 'I'm still really proud of what we've done'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

India captain Virat Kohli on Sky Sports: "It was a great game of cricket - great for everyone watching it - so we're glad to be a part of it. There were a couple of comebacks so we showed good character there but a team like England won't let you comeback every time. We could have applied ourselves better but I'm still really proud of what we've done.

"We have to take the positives, show our character and do more with the bat. Our bowlers were excellent in the second innings so we can build on that for the rest of the series."

There will be some scars for India because they had chances to win this one, too. England is not an easy place for them to play.

    Don't forget about Jimmy Anderson.

England needed an early wicket and he delivered with the dismissal of Dinesh Karthik with the sixth ball of the day.

  11. 'We didn't play to our potential'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

    BBC Test Match Special

India captain Virat Kohli on TMS: "The series is set up nicely now. The fact we didn't play to our potential and were still close in the game says everything about our side.

"Both afternoon sessions on day two and three were see-saw battles. We thought we were out of the game, then came back, then England thought they were out of the game, then came back.

"My century feels just like any hundred I score. When I was younger I used to think about playing in different countries, different countries.

"But now as captain I just think about getting my team across the line. You're able to bat longer and just think about the team."

Curran gets the player of the match award but Ben Stokes was the star today.

He came into the attack and took the big wicket of Virat Kohli in his first over...

And just a couple of balls later he dismissed Mohammed Shami to make it two in the over...

And then England's all-rounder claimed the crucial final wicket...

Saqub Sheikh: An amazing Test Match and great to see England winning against India. Sam Curran made a huge impact! Looking forward to the next four Test matches.

Famad Khan: Amidst the Kohli and Stokes hysteria, I believe enough credit hasn't been given to Curran. That 63 saved England's skin.

And Sam Curran can't hide the smile on his face when he is announced as the player of the match.

    Fully deserved.

"It feels like I'm dreaming," he says.

Joe Root is looking pretty happy at the presentation.

He says that having Sam Curran in the team is like having two Ben Stokes.

  16. 'We have to tighten a few things up at Lord's'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

    BBC Test Match Special

More from Joe Root to TMS: "It feels you with confidence when you win a close game like that. We have to make sure we turn up with the same attitude and approach and tighten up on a few things for Lord's.

"There was always something in it for the bowlers, it wasn't freescoring at any time and credit has to go to both sides' bowling attacks.

"We were in a good position on day one but at no point did you think it was a 400-450 pitch - 350-375 would've been a good score, but our bowlers got us in the game.

"It's not really my style to kiss off Virat. You always gets a great series between England and India. Hopefully we get four more Tests with the same result but we can also see some more brilliant cricket."

  19. 'None of the bowlers let me down'published at 12:47 British Summer Time 4 August 2018

England captain Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "What a game of cricket, from start to finish, swung both ways throughout. Credit to India, they played some fantastic cricket along the way.

"I'm so proud of the group, we just wanted to show that fight and desire of the three previous days and we did.

"Sam Curran's knock changed the game. There were other periods in the game beforehand that could've gone our way but to play that innings under pressure was brilliant.

"Then the bowlers were outstanding. Last night India could've got on top and swung it in their favour but none of the bowlers let me down.

"Dawid Malan is a fantastic slip fielder, that's why he's there and why he stayed there. He's got the backing of the whole group and credit for him for sticking in there and taking that catch this morning."
