India have the most ingredients that should see them take on all sides across the world, because of their seamers.

They've bowled superbly in English conditions, it's just the batting that has let them down.

If they can solve that then I do think this India side should be the best side in the world.

More from Alastair Cook on Sky Sports: "The ball swung more after lunch, just a little bit later than we expected.The way India bowled fantastic. I think I played one cut and one pull shot all day.

"It was an unbelievable spell from Mohammed Shami. I was facing Jadeja so I was quite happy. Moeen and I found it quite hard to know which way it was going. One thing Mo did pretty well was he was playing the line. There was a lot of playing and missing but - and it's a bit of a funny thing - there is a skill in that sometimes."

On his dismissal: "I don't know why I missed it! I didn't really move my feet. Could I have got forward? I don't know."

Moeen Ali's innings affected Alastair Cook. The scorecard just couldn't get going.

How many times has Cook's partner had a lower strike rate than him?

You could see Moeen really wanted to work out number three. But there are seven Tests until next year's Ashes - do I want Moeen batting three against the new ball? No.

I want Moeen coming in at number seven or eight against the old ball and a tired Australia attack, either helping England out of a tricky situation or extending their advantage.

Jonny Bairstow has notched three ducks in this series, albeit one of those was when he was batting with a broken finger.

He's averaging 26.50 - just in front of Root, who averages 24.25.

It doesn't matter where Jonny Bairstow bats if he bats like he has done in the last two Tests.

He could bat at number 11 and get out playing those shots.

Joe Root could get out like that batting at number 10, falling his head over the ball and being trapped lbw.

We've got to stop finding excuses for batsmen who just aren't playing well enough.

Keith Stewart: Enjoyable series but England have been so unconvincing. Home conditions & won 5/5 tosses, yet 2 from 3 wins could have gone either way. This match following a similar pattern. Worrying.

Alastair Cook reminded us today of what he's done for 12 years - waiting for the bad ball and playing one of his three superb shots, off the hip, pull or cut. With a ball on off-stump, he defends it. And that's how he has scored over 12,000 Test runs.

It was an extraordinary way to start, with the ovation and the guard of honour, but he's definitely going to get a second knock and that could be more difficult. But I'm delighted he got a score. He's ground down opponents over the last few years and I really wanted him to carry on and do it again today.

England opener Alastair Cook, speaking to Sky Sports: "I got the Tube this morning, so I managed to navigate that. I just didn't want to not get a score. I was so determined. There's nothing worse than going out without contributing. I'm pleased I got a bit of a score, but I'm disappointing to get out when I did.

"It all happened so quickly. The guard of honour was such a nice gesture but you're focused on batting and you don't have time to appreciate it. The reception I got was fantastic. it went on a bit and that makes you even more determined not to get out."

It was a day of emotion because of Alastair Cook. After about 20 minutes it looked like the pressure had lifted from him and you could see in his movements, he was playing nicely.

It's the perfect wicket to go on and make a century. It's also the perfect wicket for Keaton Jennings, with the ball sitting up nicely and allowing him to play off the back foot, with none of the skiddy bowling that gets him in trouble.

But then he gave his wicket away.

You can't keep just playing someone because you think he's a nice lad. You can't take away his century on debut but he averages 18 since then. It was a really soft dismissal and you worry about him in Sri Lanka against Rangana Herath.

Still, it wasn't a bad day at the office for Alastair Cook, as he prepares to bid farewell to his international career.

India's bowling has been exceptional. England's batting has struggled in this series because the ball has done a bit. It's not done as much today but India produced some really high-class bowling after lunch.

This is the first time since 1999 that there has been fewer than 200 runs in a full day's play on day one of a Test in England.

That day New Zealand scored 170-8 at The Oval.

I was cheering on dot balls in the final over.

It's an odd looking scorecard for the batsmen, but India have been excellent, particularly after losing the toss on a pitch that looked ideal for batting.

Oh, that's a great ball to end the day, Jasprit Bumrah banging in a yorker, but Adil Rashid somehow manages to get bat on it.
