    Moeen 47, Buttler 1

Ooft. Ishant gets one to stay low and scuttle past Jos Buttler's bat as he pushes forward.

Shikhar Dhawan launches himself toward the ball at backward point to stop Buttler snaffling a boundary, and the number seven blocks his way through the rest of the over.

    Jadeja 21-0-52-2

Right, here's Jos Buttler to do a bit of a rescue job, once again.

He works a single from Jadeja's final ball to get off the mark.

He was in two minds about playing the sweep shot and missed it completely. He didn't even consider reviewing it.

Stokes lbw Jadeja 11 (Eng 171-5)

Ravindra Jadeja gets one to keep low and skid on into Ben Stokes' pads.

Huge appeal and given. It's absolutely plumb, Stokes' struck on the back leg dead in front.

The all-rounder comes down the wicket to have a brief word with Moeen Ali but has no intention of reviewing.

He knew he was gone straight away. As did Jadeja, running away in celebrappeal.

Only once since 2001 has there been a full days' play (90 overs) in England with fewer than 200 runs scored.

That was the last day at Headingley in 2014 when England were batting to save the Test against Sri Lanka and only scored 192 as James Anderson was out to the penultimate ball.

The last time it happened on the first day of a Test in England was 1999 at The Oval when New Zealand made 170-8.

But New Zealand ended up winning that match by 83 runs.

I'd look at Jos Buttler to bat at number three for England. Batting him at seven is a waste of his talent.

  8. Eng 170-4published at 77 overs

The new ball is three overs away, but this old one is still swinging, as Moeen shoulders arms to Ishant's first delivery.

A flick off the hip brings Moeen a single, but that's the only run England can conjure up from the over.

With the new ball due soon, India could be in for a few more wickets today and we'll be back to the topsy-turvey day's play of the first four Tests.

  11. Eng 169-4published at 76 overs

Ravindra Jadeja continues, hurrying India along towards the new ball, and Moeen dances down the pitch and whips him over the leg side for one. He slaps the bat to reprimand himself as a fielder comes forward to gather the ball.

And that'll be four for Ben Stokes, turning Jadeja past the man at leg slip and down to the boundary.

    Moeen 44, Stokes 7

Mohammed Shami continues, some late afternoon sunshine still creeping onto the wicket, and Moeen has another big play and miss at him. It's remarkable - and lucky for England - that he hasn't managed to nick one yet.

Shot! That's lovely from Moeen, taking a fuller delivery and driving it through the covers for four.

Just a quick look at the India bowling figures. It's not been easy to score off them today.

Ben Stokes guides a lovely back foot drive straight into the path of a fielder, as Ravi Jadeja concedes just one run from his latest over.

The new ball isn't too far away for India. Time for drinks.

That's England's first boundary from the bat for just over an hour.

Full from Mohammed Shami, and Stokes whams his bat down on the ball to see out the over.

Whoopsie. Spare a thought for Rishabh Pant, who has spent an awful lot of time leaping around after a load of leg side deliveries today.

This is short from Mohammed Shami and the ball starts swinging and just doesn't stop. Pant ends up cartwheeling over the ball as it races away for four byes. Ben Stokes adds insult to injury with a glorious little cover drive for four.
