It's been slow going after lunch because India have bowled really well - they have hit a much fuller length and have dragged the batsmen forward.

Andy Mulkerrin: My eyes are determined to cause me stress. Every time Ishant Sharma is mentioned in a comment I read instant karma and think something terrible has happened and have to read back and see why it was deserved.

Ishant Sharma's gonna get you, gonna knock you right on the head...

This is a decent start. Winning the toss at The Oval is such a huge advantage.

  6. Eng 75-1published at 35 overs

Ishant Sharma strays onto the pads and Alastair Cook clips it round the corner for one.

I probably should have set up a shortcut on my keyboard to paste that sentence after the bowler's name much earlier on in Cook's career.

And here is the second drop of the session so far as Virat Kohli spilled a tough chance to remove Moeen Ali for two.

I think there were two noises there - Moeen must have got an inside edge.

  10. Eng 74-1published at 34 overs

Moeen Ali's streaky knock so far continues as he edges through the cordon for four.

Jasprit Bumrah then gets another through onto Moeen's pads and there is a brief appeal but nothing doing - looks like he hit it.

The umpire has done well there. That was a big nip-backer.

Nope. That was missing on height.

    Moeen Ali survives.

Jasprit Bumrah goes round the wicket and raps Moeen Ali's pads as England's number three shoulders arms.

Impact outside off but that doesn't matter with Moeen not playing a shot.

    Virat Kohli sends it upstairs.

    Possible future pub quiz question?

Who dropped Alastair Cook on 37 on his way to a century in his final Test?

  16. Eng 68-1published at 33 overs

Still the dot balls tot up as Cook plays and misses at one angled across. He really should be leaving those - Ishant never brings it back in to the left-hander from over the wicket.

Cook leaves the last well alone. Make that five maidens in a row since lunch.

Pros: environmentally friendly, stacking nature of handles means as many as four beers could go in each hand. Cons: death of the beer snake, black market trading of cups.

These two opened the bowling this morning for India but they've switched ends after lunch, and they're bowling tremendously well.

  19. Eng 68-1published at 32 overs

Moeen just about judges a leave correctly as Bumrah zips one past the stumps from round the wicket.

That's four straight maidens since lunch.

That shot is why Moeen Ali is not a Test-match number three.
