Alastair Cook on retiring: "I feel quite calm and as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. It's been nagging at me for the past six months or so and then there were a couple of moments where the decision made itself. Even if I had scored more runs in this series against India, I'm not sure I would have carried on playing.

There's just something there that made retiring feel right. Like the captaincy, it is a big thing to give away. My heart is saying 'go on, play a bit longer', but my head is so clearly saying that I'm making the right decision.

Things do accentuate when you don't score as many runs as you would like, but it just feels right at this moment in time."

England have batted throughout that morning session without too many alarms.

  5. Lunch - Eng 68-1published at 28 overs

    Cook 37, Moeen 2

Ooft. Lovely from Bumrah, an 88mph delivery moving away from the edge of Moeen's bat as he covers up in defence.

Moeen defends the final ball of the over, and that will be lunch.

  6. Eng 68-1published at 27.4 overs

Jasprit Bumrah continues, and Alastair Cook drops another delivery into the leg side for a single. I wonder how many times that's been written over the past 12 years.

There's then a brief delay as someone decides to wander around behind the bowler's arm.

Ben Thapa: Sometimes you can’t be frustrated at a player, but just feel sorry for them, and be sad at watching them struggle valiantly, but ultimately fruitlessly, at a level they’re not quite at. Jennings is one of those guys. He’s done his best.

  8. Eng 67-1published at 27 overs

Mohammed Shami tries out a bouncer on Moeen Ali, and Rishabh Pant throws himself up into the air to stop the ball whizzing away for byes.

Moeen ignores anything short and promptly sees out a maiden.

Even if this innings is cut off, we have already been treated to some of Alastair Cook's greatest hits. The clip, the cut, the hook. When he pulls out the straight drive, he's dipping into the rare B-sides - one for the hardcore fans that knew him before he was famous and preferred his first album.

  10. Eng 67-1published at 26 overs

Hello! Movement straight away for Bumrah, getting the ball to sneak past the outside edge of Moeen's bat. Moeen gets off strike with a nudge into the leg side, before Cook does the same.

If - and by if, I mean when - England bat again, does Cook get another guard of honour?

Anyway, Jadeja is off, and Jasprit Bumrah is back on to bowl at Moeen.

Dan Gee: When Cook gets a century and changes his mind in retirement, does he have to somehow give his guard of honour back?

  13. Eng 64-1published at 25 overs

    Cook 34, Moeen 1

That's a nice little push from Alastair Cook, his head right over the bat as he plonks the ball past Mohammed Shami for a couple.

A fine diving stop from Cheteshwar Pujara at mid-wicket stops a sure boundary from Cook, whipping the ball off his pads, and that'll be the over.

    Jadeja 5-0-15-1

Moeen gets off the mark with a little push into the leg side, while Alastair Cook unfurls another tickle off his hips.

That's not a bowler's wicket. That's one where the batsman goes into the dressing room and asks himself, "What was I doing?"

Moeen is in at three for England, while Jennings goes off to have a stern word with himself.

    Jennings c Rahul b Jadeja 23 (Eng 60-1)

    Ugh.

That's a stupid shot from Keaton Jennings, and he knows it. There's the tiniest bit of drift from Ravindra Jadeja, and Jennings has turned the ball straight into the hands of KL Rahul at leg slip. It's like he forgot he was there. KL Rahul gets both hands to it and Jennings punches his bat in annoyance as he walks off.

Ex-England batsman on BBC Test Match Special

This is the best batting pitch in England if you get in, but I was never thrilled about batting here - even though I hit four centuries for England here. If I'd liked it I would've hit a few more.

It was the biggest playing area in England, the boundaries were huge.

Alastair Cook goes for another pull shot, this time to an 85mph Mohammed Shami delivery, and misses, the ball just about missing the bat and the gloves, and going through to the keeper.

Cook blocks the final ball of the over, and that'll be a maiden. It's, er, not doing much.
