The groups of chefs, about 20 of them in front of Tenison's School, have drawn a little attention, but they aren't the only group paying tribute to Alastair Cook. I've counted at least three other groups wearing chef's hats, most of them adorning a message to the retiring opener.

Risky from Keaton Jennings, but it's safe! He shuffles down the pitch and tries to drive the ball up and over, but a leading edge skews into the air and just in front of the man at cover. Jadeja's bowling reasonably quickly here, his final delivery hurrying onto Jennings' bat as he presses forward to defend.

This is the longest opening partnership of the summer for any team.

Mohammed Shami gets a short ball back into Cook, who gets into a bit of a tangle and ends up inside edging the ball onto his pad.

Another little shuffle into the leg side takes Cook to 30 - his highest score of the series - before Jennings sees out the rest of the over.

Aggers was excited when he came back after looking at the pitch, thinking it was going to snake about but it's played well so far.

    Jadeja 3-0-10-0

Down on one knee goes Alastair Cook, chucking a big sweep at Ravindra Jadeja's latest delivery, but he misses the quicker delivery and gets rapped on the pad in the process. There's an enthusiastic appeal from the keeper, but nothing doing, with Cook well outside the line.

Throughout this game, keep an eye on the pigeons, currently pecking away at the wickets on the Tenison School side of the ground. For my money, The Oval is the most pigeonful ground in England.

Andy Flower, the acting England director of cricket, is in attendance at The Oval.

A clonking drive from Keaton Jennings adds another couple to the total, before Ajinkya Rahane leaps on the ball at cover to stop the ball flying for four.

This is Cook and Jennings' second fifty partnership of the series after making 54 together at Trent Bridge.

    Cook 28, Jennings 19

I'd take Jennings, just because I think England need a bit of continuity at the top of the order once Cook is gone. Rory Burns is the most obvious candidate to partner him.

Cook works the ball through point to bring up the fifty partnership, before he and Jennings content themselves with knocking a few singles here and there.

Curious as to whether Cook’s retirement saves Keaton’s Test career? Surely you don’t go to the sub-continent with two brand new openers?

Mohammed Shami continues, three slips in place, and Alastair Cook steals a single before Keaton Jennings sees out the rest of the over.

I like that from Jennings - it keeps the momentum going for England and he picked the right ball to reverse sweep.

  14. Eng 48-0published at 16 overs

Jadeja appeals for an lbw from his first delivery but, er, Cook's hit it. Whoops. That'll be four byes, Jadeja twirling his second ball down leg, before Cook works a full delivery away to square leg for a single.

Shot! A lovely reverse sweep from Keaton Jennings, and it flies away for four.

No opener has scored a fifty so far in this series. That has never happened in a five-match Test series.

The fewest number of fifties hit by openers in a five-match series is three, which has happened twice - South Africa v England in 1905-6 and West Indies v Australia in 1951-2.

Four! That's a bit of a loosener from Mohammed Shami, coming from round the wicket, and Cook plays it with soft hands to guide the ball through third man.

A rising delivery is thumped firmly through backward point by Cook for a couple, before the opener hustles a single off his hip.

England have missed a trick not bringing in whoever they will replace Alastair Cook with in Sri Lanka this week.

They should have gone with the best five bowling options for this pitch and that would've freed up the opportunity to bring in the next batsman. They could have played Rory Burns at three.

I'd still have played two spinner but you don't need four seamers. One of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Ben Stokes would have missed out.
