That's a big moment for Joe Root - we know what his record between 50 and 100 is like. Another failure would have been a big dent in his confidence.

More expectancy in an Oval crowd that has sore hands from all the clapping. The chatter is of the wait for Root's ton. The skipper is in no rush, straight-batted for the rest of Mohammed Shami's over.

That drop is confirmation that India are toast.

Wheels coming off for India now. Joe Root shelled by Cheteshwar Pujara at first slip. Open face, Pujara slightly stuffed by Rishabh Pant's move towards the ball, but should be taken. Root only four from a ton now...

I just missed Cook's farewell ton for a house viewing. That I'm definitely not going to buy. Anyway, nice to see India wanted Cook to hit the big 100 by throwing in some freebies to get him over the line.

Michael Vaughan was referring to the moment Cook got his ton, not the calypso cover drive. The same words could be used to describe both, though. Colin Graves is deep in conversation with Ed Smith. Presumably about how they can legally force Cook not to retire.

    Cook 108, Root 93

Hello there! Alastair Cook digs into the rarities box once more. This time, a wide one from Mohammed Shami is sent on-the-up through the covers. If you happen to have that particular Cook stamp in your collection, it's worth a few bob.

Half the press box emptied when Cook was in the nineties. Journalists came outside, standing in doorways and on the stairs, watching and waiting. Commentators, caught between wanting to be on air when Cook gets his century and nervous about being on if he gets out. It’s not often you get to experience an atmosphere like that one. A moment to be savoured.

In that spirit, mixed in with your tributes for Alastair Cook, do let me know times when you were forced to miss cricketing moments.

A few mates of mines never made their planned trip to England's Ashes win in Australia because of the Heathrow snow. Gutted.

    Thanks, Jack.

Usually, on a day like this, I'd have been at The Oval. It's been planned for some time that I would be back in the Salford office today because tonight me and my other half are going to our first ante-natal class.

That's right. My unborn child caused me to miss Alastair Cook's farewell ton.

And I will never let him or her forget about it.

Right, I've taken Alastair Cook's final Test knock as far as I can for now.

I'll hand you over the Stephan Shemilt for the afternoon session.

Who knows, maybe Cook will still be in when I come back on at tea? See you later. Cheers.

Ben Bradford: Wow! What a sensational ending for Cook, thoroughly deserved!! What a man, icon and role model! Working clinically today - both me and the patient erupted in cheers when he hit that 100, not often a patient cheers during physio treatment!

At the start of play, I didn't think Alastair Cook would reach his century on my watch and was just hoping he didn't fall before lunch.

You don't want to be the live texter that 'takes' such an important wicket.

But as he moved serenely towards his ton through the session I started thinking about what I'd write if/when he got there, ideally with one of his trademark strokes.

I had to bin most of that off when he got there in overthrows! Test cricket, eh?

Without wanting to slip into mawkish sentimentality at all, it's been a true pleasure watching Cook bat these 12 years, just getting on with the difficult task of opening the batting, remaining England's constant at the top of the order throughout plenty of chaotic and joyous times.
