  1. SA 62-4published at 9 overs

Van Niekerk 5, Du Preez 17

Du Preez unleashes a good on-drive for four, while a full toss is guided for four to fine leg - via the hands of Kerr at fine leg, who seems to struggle with an unexpected bounce. And it's three fours from the over as Du Preez slices one over point. In fact, make that four fours as Van Niekerk expertly opens the face to guide the ball to the third man boundary.

I'm looking very keenly at Amelie Kerr as we've signed her for the Southern Vipers!

And I like Tahuhu bowling in the middle order as she's so hard to get away.

  3. SA 45-4published at 8 overs

    Target 217

Time for the record-breaking 17-year-old Amelia Kerr, fresh from her heroics in Ireland. After three dot balls from the leg-spinner, Du Preez drills a single to long-on, Van Niekerk bunts one into the covers, and Du Preez advances to guide one to mid-wicket. But singles will not win them this game...

Net run-rate does eventually come into this tri-series if teams are level - but head-to-head counts first.

  5. SA 42-4published at 7 overs

Pace bowler Lea Tahuhu has switched ends, and already this target is looking as though it may be beyond the Proteas. Du Preez and Van Niekerk find her difficult to get away - just a single from the over. Well bowled.

To show how far behind they are, the DLS par score with four wickets down is 88.

South Africa's bowling was too formulaic - getting Kapp to bowl two at the start and two at the end, for instance. New Zealand are rotating their bowlers and not letting South Africa settle.

  7. SA 41-4published at 6 overs

    Target 217

Mignon du Preez in at six. Even if the rain gets worse, that can't save South Africa - as we're through five overs so a game has been constituted, while those wickets have left them well short on Duckworth-Lewis-Stern.

  8. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.4 overs

    Luus c Bates b Jensen 0 (SA 40-4)

Sune Luus hits out at her second ball and Bates takes another catch at mid-off - this time diving forward and taking it full-length.

The right shot option, but a great catch from Suzie Bates, you can't keep her out of the action.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.2 overs

    Wolvaardt c Bates b Jensen 25 (SA 40-3)

Wheels coming off for South Africa - after a change of ends, Jensen induces Wolvaardt to lift the ball to the edge of the circle where skipper Bates takes a good catch running around from mid-off.

  11. SA 40-2published at 5 overs

    Target 217

Dane van Niekerk is the new batter. Time for a captain's innings?

South Africa have another game today - I wonder how they'll feel if they get pumped in this first game? As a player, I'd probably be livid to have to play twice in one day. The guys don't do it. I can understand why they've done it because it's a tri-series, but i'll be really hard for South Africa. They're up with the rate, but it'll be a tough chase for them.

  13. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.4 overs

    Brits c Satterthwaite b Kasperek 5 (SA 40-2)

Scoreboard pressure? Brits tries to hit over the top and it's an easy catch for Amy Satterthwaite at extra cover.

  14. SA 39-1published at 4.1 overs

    Target 217

Kasperek returns at the Somerset Pavilion End, but her first ball is too short and Wolvaardt dismissively guides it for four through fine leg.

It's that horrible sort of drizzle outside. It's not good for the hair - it's gone a bit frizzy.

  16. SA 35-1published at 4 overs

    Wolvaardt 20, Brits 5

Tazmin Brits in at first drop - and she hits Devine down the ground for four.

A good catch. You hate to make comparisons, but it does show what happens when you have a class keeper, who can make all the difference - compared to Lizelle Lee who is a very good fielder and very quick in the outfield, but she's not a keeper. South Africa need to find a keeper.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 3.3 overs

    Lee c Martin b Devine 10 (SA 29-1)

Gone! Lee attempts a similar shot to the last ball when Devine tries another short delivery, and is taken down the leg side by keeper Katey Martin. Big blow for the Proteas, after all those runs Lee scored against England in the ODIs.

  19. SA 29-0published at 3.2 overs

A fourth different bowler in the space of four overs as Sophie Devine takes over at the River End. One of the world's top-ranked all-rounders, fresh from her batting heroics, her right-arm seam is helped down the leg side for four by Lee.

  20. SA 25-0published at 3 overs

    Lee 6, Wolvaardt 19

Jensen pulls it back a little, just two singles from her last four balls.

And believe it or not, New Zealand only had 24 at this stage...
