Another series. Another top-order failure from England.

If you're just waking up, England are five down against Sri Lanka at the end of the morning session.

They lost debutant opener Rory Burns and number three Moeen Ali in the third over before a little partnership of 62 between captain Joe Root and Keaton Jennings.

But the aggressive Root managed to york himself to Rangana Herath and was bowled, Jennings was bowled for 46 and Ben Stokes played a poor sweep shot and also had his timbers knocked back for seven.

England now have Jos Buttler and debutant wicketkeeper Ben Foakes at the crease.

  3. "An absolute shocker"published at 06:32 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

    BBC cricket correspondent in Galle

It’s been an absolute shocker, with some poor shots all the way round.

On a ground where every run is crucial England are throwing it away at the moment.

Jennings played well and Burns was unlucky, but otherwise too many players have got themselves out.

    Eng 113-5

No shortage of action in the opening session! Five wickets, 16 boundaries, two burned appeals...

  5. Eng 111-5published at 28.3 overs

Akila Dananjaya zips one through, Ben Foakes close to tickling it behind. No worries in the end. Jos Buttler then squeezes a shot away for two through the off side.

Three clocks, three totally different times in Galle. We are going to get at least one more over in before lunch.

  7. Eng 108-5published at 28 overs

    Foakes 4, Buttler 6

Ben Foakes is hit on the pads, a mile outside his off stump, but that doesn't stop keeper Niroshan Dickwella from a guttural appeal.

Not even close to being out. Foakes looks good, so far.

Mike Bryan-Jones: This 1st session of the #SLvENG, external match is the perfect representation of what is wrong with England in Test cricket currently...some of the dismissals are embarrassing

Mark Davison: Yet another imbecilic dismissal from Stokes. Sick and tired seeing him show annoyance with himself after being made to look stupid. Very overrated player.

  9. Eng 106-5published at 27 overs

    Foakes 3, Buttler 5

Played, Ben Foakes. Watchful as the ball lands right under his helmet. Middle of the bat, soft hands. Pushed away. Yet another maiden though.

  10. Eng 104-5published at 26 overs

Just 10 minutes until lunch in Galle, about an hour before breakfast in the UK. Another maiden from the Sri Lankan spin duo. Dilruwan Perera the fastest Sri Lankan to 100 Test wickets.

Rangana Herath was given a guard of honour before coming out to play in this, his final Test. England's batsmen have given Dilruwan Perera a similar route to their stumps.

  12. Eng 104-5published at 24.3 overs

That shot by Ben Stokes was really poor. He was actually bowled on middle stump, just got it all wrong. Rangana Herath tickles an edge from the bat of Ben Foakes, who surely wouldn't have expected to be batting quite yet. It doesn't carry though.

  13. Eng 104-5published at 24 overs

    Buttler 5, Foakes 1

The music played in Galle when that wicket fell sounded a lot like Bronski Beat but I refuse to believe that it was. Niche.

Ben Foakes has replaced Ben Stokes which at least means they are not batting together, a commentating nightmare. Chris Woakes is thankfully not playing either.

Foakes is off the mark on debut.

  14. wicket

    Stokes b Perera 7 (Eng 103-5)

Oh dear, oh dear. This is a poor shot selection from Ben Stokes, trying to sweep Dilruwan Perera away but he doesn't pick the length, or particularly the line, and he's bowled around his legs.

The now familiar crash of leather on stumps. Send me another wicketkeeper!

  15. Eng 103-4published at 06:12 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

Sri Lanka lost both of their reviews in the opening 12 overs so they can't appeal that one. Think Ben Stokes was safe anyway...

  16. Eng 103-4published at 23 overs

The 100 is up for England, Jos Buttler crunches one to the fence. Lovely shot.

Who else is there Kevin? I'm all for Trescothick or Gooch padding up but who should be opening for England?

Kevin Ticehurst: How many more chances are we going to give Keaton Jennings?! He isn’t good enough for this level, and yet again has proved it once more.

  19. Eng 99-4published at 22 overs

    Stokes 7, Buttler 1

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, not exactly two men for a steady rebuild. England could be all out before you've had your breakfast. Or they could have 250 up.

Either way, I doubt it will be dull.

  20. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 21.1 overs

    Jennings b Perera 46 (Eng 98-4)

Right, let's front up. We had just made a 'Jennings 50' graphic and were even contemplating sending you a push alert. Classic case of mockers.

A change of bowling does the trick, Dilruwan Perera hurrying one up to catch Keaton Jennings out and it rattles into his stumps. The wait for a Test match fifty goes on for the England opener.

England have one of their three wicketkeepers out to bat, Jos Buttler in at six. He's not keeping wicket this match though. Got it?
