Much hilarity as a rogue burst of fireworks goes off as Rangana Herath bowls the first ball of his final Test.

He was greeted onto the field at start of play by fireworks, then more as it was announced he was coming onto bowl and then as he delivered his first ball we heard another random explosion as Jennings calmly blocked the ball with clouds of smoke floating over the fort in the distance.

Was that a chance? First ball back and Joe Root tickles an inside edge into his pads and it falls short of the fielder.

Root is very agitated in the crease now, coming down the pitch to the next one and almost being run out.

    I'm saying Untouchables...

Is it Herath’s last Test? They really should have told someone! He’s greeted by fireworks as he comes onto bowl.

Amazing celebration in Galle this week with the city basically turned into a shrine for the spinner.

England survive Rangana Herath's first over.

Fun fact: Waterworld isn't actually that bad. It's no Dances with Wolves or the Bodyguard, sure. But there are much worse 80s/90s action films about and I've seen them all.

  7. Eng 56-2published at 12.2 overs

Fireworks to accompany Rangana Herath's first ball of his final Test. John Emburey didn't get that!

  8. Postpublished at 12 overs

Spinner Akila Dananjaya gets pronounced spin and turn with the last ball of the over. Joe Root does well to watch it by. Here comes Rangana Herath!

  9. Eng 52-2published at 11.4 overs

Wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, that's on you. He was the only man desperate to appeal for a catch.

He may have cost his side in the long run.

  10. Eng 52-2published at 05:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

Keaton Jennings has missed that by a mile. Sri Lanka have wasted both of their reviews inside 12 overs.

    Madness! Shane Watson style.

Very enthusiastic behind the stumps, is that a catch?!

England survive another over. Here's the story of the morning so far though, early wickets for the hosts.

  13. Eng 52-2published at 11 overs

    Root 26, Jennings 16

We think it was Angelo Mathews at first slip for that Keaton Jennings chance in the previous over, he got a touch on it too. I'm not saying a drop though, it was a fingertip and no more.

Sri Lanka spread the slip umbrella to Suranga Lakmal. A sort of second slip, third slip and gully.

  14. Eng 52-2published at 10.2 overs

Every innings is a big innings for Keaton Jennings. He's a long way from being secure in this England side.

He's made it through the opening 10 overs, tick that one off.

Amazing we have play considering the downpour last night and the rain over the past few days.

Burns was a little unlucky, but Moeen Ali played a really lazy stroke to be bowled round the wicket for a golden duck.

That shot illustrates why some have concerns about him batting at three in Tests.

But Joe Root is now playing rather fluently and Jennings looks solid in what is a big innings for him as England begin life after Alastair Cook.

  16. Eng 52-2published at 10 overs

Chance! Keaton Jennings with a thick, tasty edge that falls betwixt and between keeper and slip and ends up going for four.

An unlucky over for the hosts!

  17. Not outpublished at 05:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

    Eng 47-2

Joe Root looked confident throughout and he's safe, the ball did hit him outside off stump. No joy for Akila Dananjaya.

  18. Postpublished at 05:15 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

That's hit Joe Root outside the line, hasn't it?

    Oooh I don't know actually.

  19. Sri Lanka reviewpublished at 05:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2018

    Howwzzaattt?!

Joe Root is hit on the pads and Sri Lanka like it. He's given not out but they send it upstairs...

This is Joe Root's first Test innings in Sri Lanka. He averages 53 in India but just 24 in Bangladesh. He's nearly there already.
