Well bowled! Three beauties in a row from Dilruwan Perera. But Jack Leach isn't nicking one...

  2. Eng 308-8published at 89.1 overs

Jack Leach with two slips and a leg slip and he nearly nicks one...

  3. Eng 308-8published at 89 overs

    Foakes 87, Leach 1

Well played Jack Leach, sees it out nicely, even taking the strike for the final scheduled over of the day...

  4. Eng 307-8published at 88.1 overs

Ben Foakes takes a single first ball, putting Jack Leach on strike. Interesting.

An lbw appeal against Leach first up! No dice.

  5. Eng 306-8published at 88 overs

    Foakes 86, Leach 0

Jack Leach is the new batsman, the man they call the nut sees out the last two balls. Can he see out the rest of the day?

    Rashid c De Silva b Perera 35 (Eng 306-8)

Live by the sword, die by the sword. England's approach, and whether it was too aggressive or not, was the talk of the morning session but we can't really blame Adil Rashid for this one when he's been tonking it to all corners since coming in.

Or can we? Dilruwan Perera throws one up with a bit more flight and a bit more turn and Rashid edges it to slip. Perera has four...

  7. Eng 306-7published at 87.3 overs

Ben Foakes aborts the bowler's run up, some sightscreen shenanigans behind the bowler's arm.

He calls for a drink after clipping a single away. Is this now England's day? It's getting up to a decent first-innings knock thanks to the lower middle order. Oh hang on...

Jonathan Billings: I hope Ben Foakes is as good with the gloves as he has been with the bat! Cracking knock so far

Ralph: Adil. Not bad for a white ball specialist!

  9. Eng 305-7published at 87 overs

    Foakes 85, Rashid 35

Another! Adil Rashid is firing, another huge shot, out of his crease and he brings up the 50 partnership with a crunching hit through the offside.

Rashid is 35 from 36 balls...

  10. Eng 300-7published at 86 overs

    Foakes 84, Rashid 31

England hit 300. They would have snapped your hand off at lunch.

As the torrential rain fell through the night in almost biblical fashion you couldn’t imagine for a moment we would have a full day's play here in Galle.

But it now looks almost certain we’ll see 90 overs and maybe even a couple more.

The forecast for tomorrow has improved as well with around a 30 percent chance of thundery showers during the day.

  12. Eng 298-7published at 85.2 overs

    Foakes 83, Rashid 30

Half chance maybe? Adil Rashid is caught out by some extra bounce from the new ball, it's gloved just wide of short leg.

    He picks up another single.

The cameras pick out Matt Prior in the stands, a wicketkeeper who scored a ton on his debut. Prior scored 126 first up against the West Indies in 2007, and won 79 Test caps.

Will Ben Foakes get there? Adil Rashid might catch him up, swatting another big shot away for four. Almost six. And again!

Big, that is six! Straight back into the sightscreen. Strike rate of 104 for the spinner...

  15. Eng 282-7published at 84 overs

    Foakes 79, Rashid 18

Was that a chance? The fielder was over the line when he tried to take the catch. Perfectly judged, Rashid will tell you.

Adil Rashid has come out batting like the England of the opening session. It's not been dull, while at the other end Ben Foakes has continued with his well-paced accumulator. Great shot that though, swept hard and fast to the fence.

Time for a hundred before the end of play...?

  16. Eng 276-7published at 83 overs

Adil Rashid, you lucky, lucky man.

Suranga Lakmal bowls what might be the first bouncer of the day and Rashid top-edges down to fine leg. Akila Danajaya is the man down there and Rashid's heart must have been in his mouth. Akila tries to steady himself right on the edge but in the end the ball has just enough on it that the Sri Lankan can't take the catch inside the rope.

He already has a foot on the foam boundary triangle when taking the catch and drops it anyway. A let-off.

Ben Foakes now has the highest score for a wicketkeeper on debut away from England. Any more clauses into a stat?

    He has looked textbook, really.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has limped away for more treatment on that groin injury. He can't have a runner, remember.

Well judged Adil Rashid! He leaves an away swinger which is pretty close to taking the top of off...

Nice swing bowling from Suranga Lakmal. Rashid then leans into a half volley and punches the drive to the fence.
