England coach Trevor Bayliss on Sky Sports: "We gave ourselves a chance today. The overcast conditions added another 30 or 40 to that. The two guys (Woakes and Broad) showed their class in these conditions.

"Ireland really competed hard and they were in front of the game on day one. They showed what they can do. A bit more experience and they'll give some teams a bit of a hurry up."

Ireland captain William Porterfield, speaking to TMS: "I would love to rewind a couple of hours and try that again.

"Not many people would've given us a chance to be in with a shout of winning the game in the fourth innings though. Another 70 or so in the first innings and we were in a good position to do that.

"It all happened pretty quickly - they exploited the overcast conditions and made us play a lot. All the dismissals were lbw, bowled or caught by slip or keeper - the exact dismissals a bowling side is looking for on that pitch in these conditions. It's a big learning curve for the lads.

"We're setting very good foundations. What a win could've done for the game in Ireland would've been massive but we put a very good Test side under a lot of pressure and we're still learning in this format. You've got to nail that first innings in Tests and this reinforces that.

"As long as we're learning and taking it forward it's great. We've got to reflect on the positives like Tim Murtagh getting on the honours board, which is a great achievement."

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to Sky Sports, on whether the World Cup win impacted their performance against Ireland: "It did play a part - there's no getting away from that.

"Personally, it would have been nice to celebrate it for longer and savour the moment. That's the game - that's what we've got to come to terms with."

There's some T20 Blast matches in action tonight - might be worth keeping an eye on this one...

England bowler Stuart Broad, speaking to TMS: "Both me and Woakesy would roll these conditions up today and take them everywhere with us. You fancy defending anything in these conditions.

"Jack Leach's knock gave us something to defend and we felt 180 was a defendable total on this pitch.

"Ireland bowled beautifully that first morning and maybe for us you could see we'd not played much red ball cricket for five months. It tested out defences and we weren't up to keeping it out.

"The biggest part of this match was us picking up 10 wickets on day one because if Ireland had got a huge lead that would've been it.

"A lot has happened in two and a half days!"

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to Sky Sports, on England's repeated batting collapses:"I would like to see us approach the first two days with the intensity we went into this morning's play with.

"For some reason, we've got no problems getting up for a game when it's Australia or India. but it's matches like this that we have to take a good, hard look at ourselves and do it better. It's been happening for a while.

"Do we take the foot off? Are we able to get into the mood to compete and be ruthless? We showed this morning how ruthless we can be - we nee do get that into our batting as well."

Andrew McTernan: That England victory was never in doubt was it!?! Fair play to Woakes and Broad today, that was superb bowling in the conditions. Batting needs improvement/strengthening mind.

More from Trevor Bayliss to TMS: "You want to have that positive mental approach but that means making good decisions and making sure you pick the ball to drive that is a real half volley. If the wicket is doing a bit you shelve the drive on the up.

"Full credit to Ireland, it was good to see them compete for a couple of days. But it's very difficult to go for your first Test win in these conditions.

"I'll be honest, I was against the decision to send Jack Leach out as a nightwatchman, but he went above and beyond the job that was asked of him. It was a fantastic effort to bat that long, not just to take the shine off the ball but to show the batsmen the intensity we need.

"If some of the batters can learn from that, we're in a good spot."

More from Joe Root to TMS: "I don't have concerns about the batting. It's difficult coming out of a World Cup onto an extreme wicket. We didn't play loosely on a flat wicket.

"Ireland bowled well and exploited our defences. We might have been a bit tentative in the first innings and could've rotated the strike better to stop their bowlers settling in against one batsmen.

"But they are the challenges you get on a surface like this. Hopefully we won't have too many of them in the summer but if we do, then we know what it takes to win on it.

"I had a poor day yesterday. I ran Joe Denly out when we looked in command and it opened the door for them. Sometimes you get away with that in the shorter formats but you don't in Test cricket. I have to take that on the chin.

"We still managed to find a way to win and that shows great resilience, courage and unity. Now I feel like we can really start focusing on the Ashes."

England coach Trevor Bayliss, speaking to TMS: "The way we played today was top class. The first two days we were embarrassed by how we played - our backs were against the walls today and conditions were helpful. In those conditions Woakes and Broad are top class.

"We've had concerns about the top order for a little while. We're looking for someone to take over from Strauss and Cook and we need someone to put their hand up. Jason Roy got a decent score of 72 but we need someone to make 170 in those situations.

"It's always good to talk a few home truths after a win. It's the intensity we play at. We've never had a problem playing intensely enough against India or Australia, but England have a history of not going as hard as we should against teams we should beat. But we had that today in the last innings."

England's Ashes squad will be announced in the next couple of days, with the first Test beginning at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Australia announced theirs a little earlier today.

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "It's pretty special for Tim Murtagh to leave here with something on the board.

"If we had managed to get 50 or 70 more in the first innings, that turns it into a different chase today."

England coach Trevor Bayliss on Sky Sports: "I don't think we'll have any problems getting ourselves up for the Ashes. We'll have a few guys come back into the team who have had a rest, so I'm looking forward to it.

"It's no secret that we've been looking for numbers one, two and three for a little while. These guys have their chance.

"Burns and Denly have done OK for us over the winter without setting the world on fire. Jason Roy showed glimpses of what he can do."

Stuart Broad, speaking to Sky Sports: "I do feel fresh as a daisy. It was good to get some overs in. Ireland bowled beautifully the first morning. We saw today what Lord's does - you always look up, not down. We didn't see 38 all out coming our way."

"We were nowhere near our best but managed some pressure moments well. We knew we were capable of defending that total, we stayed calm and when our bowlers perform like that, it makes it easier.

"I don't think the World Cup accounted for that first day. We knew the challenges of the schedule and the modern player has to manage that and be ready for these games.

"As players you pride yourself on managing that - some of us maybe didn't get it quite right but minds will be fully ready for the Ashes."

The pitch did a bit but you can't tell me that England shouldn't have got more than 85 and then got much more yesterday as well.

It's not a substandard pitch. It wasn't a minefield. Jack Leach got 92! If the pitch was horrendous, a tailender wouldn't have got 92. He got there because he stayed patient and desperately wanted to stay out there.
