Joe Root on announcing the Ashes squad: "I'm pretty confident. We'll have a final meting today at some point and make sure we're all very clear. It's an exciting time for everyone. It's nice to go into it with this win and manged the pressure situations, to come out the other side."

Chris Woakes, who took 6-19, on Sky Sports: "As a bowling unit we felt confident we could knock them over. We had to be professional - and we were."

More from Joe Root to TMS: "The bowling performance today was brilliant and we exploited the conditions fantastically well.

"We put it in good areas and our attack in English conditions are the best in the world.

"On that pitch, it wasn't a fair contest. That's the way I'd like to put it but it was the same for both sides and you've got to find a way to win."

Man of the match Jack Leach, speaking to TMS: "It is bizarre. I bowled three overs for 26 and won man of the match. It's not sunk in, the whole game is a bit of a blur.

"The Irish showed some real fight and got well ahead of the game. I went back to the hotel feeling low after day one. But I just took it a ball at a time and it ended up being a great day and we won the game.

"I've dwelt too much on not getting those eight runs - if you'd offered me 92 or 40 odd then I'd take the 92. I just wanted to play for the team and it felt enjoyable being out there. I didn't get there but you get what your deserve in cricket and I don't think I deserved to get a hundred.

"I crunched one drive through extra cover and the noise that came with it was just amazing. I was a bit nervous in front of a full house and home crowd on day one but really got into it on day two."

England captain Joe Root, speaking to TMS: "Never in doubt was it... I don't like saying this but the wicket was substandard for a Test match.

"We worked really hard yesterday to get a score but we could have batted better through the whole game.

"Ireland bowled very well, we very discipline and asked good questions. Credit to Jack Leach for his 92 - it set an example to everyone, he was very disciplined, knew where to score his runs and left well.

"Every batsman has a different way of playing and we've got to get the best out of every individual. We've got to be slightly tighter and more selective at times, especially the captain."

Olly Stone lasted just one ball this morning, but that was the only thing that went Ireland's way.

Ireland were dismissed today by some brilliant bowling.

England captain Joe Root at the presentation: "I knew that was a lot of runs on that surface. We found ourselves in a similar position at Edgbaston against India last year. I thought it was very important we stayed calm, asked the right questions, and that's exactly what we did today. It's very pleasing, the way we manged certain pressure situations throughout the games. It wasn't by any stretch the perfect game for us but sometimes that can be a really important part of your learning. We'll take a lot from this game."

Ireland captain William Porterfield: "We put ourselves in a position to win the game - that's why we're so gutted up there.

"We knew it was going to be tough with the lights on and drizzle in the air. But we had to dig deep and get through that. Fair play to the two lads to how they bowled - they made it difficult.

"If we had managed to get 50 or 70 more in the first innings, that turns it into a different chase today."

If this were boxing the referee would have stopped it in the first round. Instead, it feels like England got up off the canvas in the 12th round and landed an undeserved knock out blow. Unlucky Ireland.

Player of the match Jack Leach: "Bowling three overs for 26 and I've got man of the match - I didn't see that happening. I'm a number 11, but I found some form out there.

"Woakesey and Broady bowled brilliantly this morning. They put the ball in the right area and things seemed to happen. We got the win and that;s the most important thing."

The trouble is the Ireland batsmen will only face that type of bowling on these type of pitches once every few years. That leaves them very exposed.

Ireland were excellent with the ball and in the field. But the batting looks out of its depth.

Ireland will only get better by playing more cricket. They don't face this sort of bowling often. A lot of teams would have struggled against Broad and Woakes in these conditions today, and Ireland have put up enough of a fight and showed enough skill over the previous few days to show that they deserve the opportunities Test cricket brings.

Also - England were bowled out for 85!
