That is beautifully bowled. Cummins bowls quick and straight and he doesn't waste many balls. They're going through to the keeper with real pace. Burns was going to duck it but it was too late. At nearly 90mph, you've got about a third of a second to play the ball.

Australia have that early wicket! Burns was in two minds whether to get out of the way of that or play at it.

    Burns c Lyon b Cummins 11 (Eng 19-1)

Yeah, you can see why Pat Cummins' average is so low on day five.

A well-directed short ball that snorts up at Rory Burns and leaves the England opener uncertain of how to play it.

He can't drop his hands or duck and instead fends at it, the ball looping up off the shoulder of the bat for Nathan Lyon to take a simple catch at point.

Australia strike early. Out comes England captain Joe Root.

Be selective. You get a long half volley or a long hop, put that away. Other than that, over my dead body are you getting me out.

Rory Burns has become the fourth England batsman to bat on all five days of a five-day Test.

The others are Andrew Flintoff against India at Mohali in 2006, Allan Lamb against West Indies at Lord's in 1984 and Geoffrey Boycott against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1977.

Jason Roy has got a lovely drive, but you want him to play it, especially early on.

Pattinson gets one through on to Roy's front pad. Appeal but nothing doing. That was going down leg.

England pick up a leg bye.

I didn't understand Australia leaving England only seven overs to bat last night. It's not enough to get into a rhythm as a bowler.

That's a typo CricViz, right? You meant bat, not ball. Please?

What I'm concerned with, if I was an England supporter, is the comments coming out this morning from England sources about playing your normal game. I'm going woah, hang on a minute. This is not normal. You're trying to save a Test match on a worn pitch.

  15. Eng 17-0published at 7.2 overs

Ah. Pat Cummins responds with a snorter that lifts off a length and beats Rory Burns' outside edge.

That's a bold, confident start from the first innings centurion. It was a half-volley and he's put it away.

I think Joe Root at number three today has a huge part to play. England have to get the balance right when it comes to rotating the strike, and Joe Root is brilliant at that.

Rory Burns and Jason Roy came through seven overs unscathed last night.

Another 70 overs from them would be grand.

They stride out to the middle now as Australia take up their fielding positions.
