Steve from Essex: If we are not producing technical batsman why are the ECB pursuing with The 100? What will that format achieve?

Dave Phelps in St Ives: Make Buttler captain, put Joe Root back to number 4 so he can play with a cheeky smile on his face again without all the pressure.

Oh, airy from Joe Denly, plonking his foot forward and driving loosely away from his body, but he's going to get four for it as Usman Khawaja, in a sort of fifth slip position, lets the ball fly past his hand.

Peter Siddle, who does a good line in angry faces, lets out a word that I can't repeat on the BBC.

    Four!

This is uncharacteristically wayward from Peter Siddle, sending consecutive deliveries down the leg side, and Tim paine can't do anything to stop the second trickling down the hill for four.

Ben in Leicester: Everyone seems to be complaining about Jason Roy or Joe Root, from the other perspective David Warner hasn't fared any better for an opener this series and he's experienced! Players need to find their form it's normal; Root could easily score a century next Test then he's a hero all of a sudden.

Amazing we're still in this position even though so much time has been lost. It would have been a cracking Test match if all five days would have been played.

Little bit of ball watching by Burns because Denly was halfway down the track there.

Let's not do that, ey, fellas? A comedy run out is not on the agenda.

Joe Denly comes tearing down the pitch for a single, Rory Burns sends him back, and they both hesitate mid-pitch. Denly manages to scramble home before Usman Khawja can whizz the ball back to Tim Paine.

Denly has looked very composed, good use of the feet there and seems to be lining up the seamers pretty well.

  14. Eng 45-2published at 15.3 overs

Joe Denly is beaten all ends up by Nathan Lyon, the ball turning sharply and somehow missing the stumps.

Oh, hello! Tossed up from Lyon and Denly takes it on, shimmying out of his crease and pumping the ball over mid-on. Lovely stuff.

It's not been the best Test for Australia when it comes to the catching department.

  16. Tom Curran out for the seasonpublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 17 August 2019

Injury news and England one-day bowler Tom Curran, who was part of the World Cup-winning squad but did not play a game, will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a side injury against Sussex. The 24-year-old has played two Tests, the last of which was in January 2018.

A no-ball from Peter Siddle gives England a run, while Rory Burns contemplates having a fiddle outside his off stump.

Burns ducks underneath a Siddle short ball to end the over.

  19. Eng 40-2published at 14.3 overs

I think that's twice now that Australia - and Nathan Lyon in particular - have had an lbw shout against Rory Burns, decided not to review it, and it was going on to hit the stumps.

I'm sure that'll cheer Justin Langer up even more.

James Matthews: Regarding these ludicrous suggestions that we replace Root - would you replace him with the player with the highest test average or the highest county average? Both of which are of course, Joe Root.
