Well, if you can't get Smith out, might as well get the other blokes out instead.

That turned just enough. It was a nice delivery and a tricky one if you have just come in.

    Out!

Pat Cummins has edged Jack Leach to slip. That's a nice bit of bowling, Leach drawing Cummins forward, and the ball slides off the outside edge of the bat and into Ben Stokes' mitts. I'm going to assume it wasn't a no ball...

Shot! Tossed up from Jack Leach and Steve Smith merrily thumps it away for four. Sigh. As you were.

It is dark and gloomy above Old Trafford. Much like England's spirits.

Maybe Smith gets nervous in the 240s as well, England should look to get him then.

£55,315.12 for a bottle of beer. I'd have cried.

  8. £55,000 for a beer?!published at 16:46 British Summer Time 5 September 2019

Have you heard the one about the Australian cricket journalist who was charged £55,000 for a bottle of beer...?

Peter Lalor ordered the £5.50 Deuchers IPA at Manchester's Malmaison hotel before being stunned to discover he had been charged $99,983.64 (£55,315.12).

Lalor, who was in the city to cover the Ashes series, now believes he drank "the most expensive beer in history".

The money left Mr Lalor's bank account and he says he was told it would take 10 business days for the refund to be processed.

"Australians find England pretty expensive usually, but this takes the cake," he said.

    Run rate 3.67

Starting wide and trailing wider from Craig Overton, and Steve Smith watches it go swinging through to Jonny Bairstow.

England ave decided to bore Smith out by pinging delivery after delivery wide outside his off stump. He ignores them all, before finally clipping a single into the on side to end the over.

Just flicked over to the footy news to see the FIFA nominations for the best 11 players.... Steve Smith must be gutted he missed out, surely he's up there with the best strikers! We'd take him at Spurs.

    Smith 180, Cummins 4

Steve Smith retreats back into his shell after that harrumphing six and taps a leisurely single into the leg side, before Pat Cummins presses forward in defence to end the over.

    My word.

A high, filthy full toss from Jack Leach and Steve Smith absolutely smokes it over cow corner for a big 'un.

Ugh. A gimme from Craig Overton, drifting on to Pat Cummins' pads, and he's easily worked around the corner for four.

    Cummins is under way.
