Stokes continues but is leaking runs badly. This is a half-volley and Paine smacks it to the boundary. England's all-rounder is going at six runs per over.
If you were wondering if it could get any worse... There's your answer.

Ben Stokes is just holding his left side here.
Smith 145, Paine 42
Ball is coming out of Craig Overton's hand at 80mph and is dying by the time it reaches Jonny Bairstow. Tim Paine looks at ease.
Ben Stokes replaces the exceptional Stuart Broad.

An early reminder that Tim Paine has never scored a Test century. He drives for four to move to 42.
The boundary brings up the hundred partnership. Both men should have been out but England have given them extra lives.
I'm all up for trying that. Can we get a cute child to give it a try?

Perhaps if we just politely asked him to leave?

Excellent dedication to fancy dress with the tattoos.
There's a bit of swing for Broad at the minute. Smith has it covered though. Broad will have a bad back before long from all the carrying he is doing.

England could do with three more Ben Stokes right now.
Smith 144, Paine 36
What does Steve Smith's series of mannerisms and non-stop twitching do for his life expectancy? He literally never switches off. He leaves a ball and is waving his glove around telling himself what he should have done differently.
Someone should write a thesis on him.

The whole Test has felt flat to me. The rain was probably to blame yesterday. Smith is doing it today.

It's just flat, isn't it? England's body language, the mood in the crowd, the weather. It's as if Steve Smith watched what happened at Headingley and turned up at Old Trafford with the sole intent of spoiling the party. If this is the Ashes disappearing, they are slipping away quietly into the night.
Smith 144, Paine 36
It mustn't just be luck. Smith misses good balls or squirts the ball short of gully too often for it to be all down to fortune.
Craig Overton is coming on for Jofra Archer. This has not been Archer's Test at all.

Oh, that's a beauty.
WHY DOES HE NOT NICK THEM???
Another good ball from Broad. Smith plays at it but the ball beats him and passes into the gloves of Jonny Bairstow.
We're back under way. Stuart Broad is going to run in for his 22nd over. He must be getting a little weary.
