When the England management team get beyond column 'Z' on their spreadsheet of plans for getting Steve Smith out, they will move into column 'AA'. Luckily, spreadsheets go up to column 'XFD' these days - so hopefully by the time they get to plan #16384, they might actually get him.

This is getting more and more painful for England now - no pun intended. The Australia skipper drives Jofra Archer to the boundary.
Archer is still bowling around 86mph.

Theo Kyriacou: England’s best player has been the rain. Hoping for another magical spell to snatch a draw.
Smith 143, Paine 32
Smith is into his nervous 140s now. If this doesn't work then we may as well give up now.

As a 16-year-old lanky seamer I bowled the opposition's star batsman out in a Yorkshire club match on a no-ball. Skipper and father behind the stumps made me walk the two miles home and wash up for a week.

Stuart Broad slaps one hand onto the other in dismay. Steve Smith nods and says something along the lines of "well bowled". The Australian is beaten outside off. No edge. Again.
Stuart Broad has switched back over the wicket. Do England stick with these plans for long enough?

Glenn McGrath's starting to get one of those smug and frankly annoying looks on his face.
Smith 139, Paine 32
Tim Paine has crept up to 32 now. Jason Roy could well be feeling worse and worse with every run.
No joy for Archer in this over. This new ball isn't doing a lot.

I've got a theory on why Jack Leach bowled a no ball and I have this recollection that it happened to me a few times. It was a slightly slower delivery and when you try and bowl a slower ball, you delay putting that front foot down slightly. Because you're doing that, it just creeps forward.
Smith 138, Paine 29
A yorker from round the wicket is defended by Smith.
There's more excitement coming from the temporary stand. They're still distracted.
The new ball isn't working so far for England.
Plan Z (ii) starts with about the same success as all of the others before. Despite the change of angle Steve Smith drives perfectly for four.
Stuart Broad is going to bowl round the wicket to Steve Smith. We can't even use letters anymore to say which plan England are onto to try and get him out. We've surely seen more than 26 by now. Plan Z (ii)?

Would it be constitutionally acceptable to prorogue Steve Smith until mid-October?

Ben Stokes has just drop-kicked a giant inflatable watermelon from the middle.
The crowd sound very distracted by the play on the field which is never a good sign for England's fortunes.
The Smith v Archer sequel has been a bit of a flop so far in this match. The Australian is winning the battle comfortably so far. Can Archer change his fortunes in this spell?
