Names and numbers on shirts are great, but when every single player on the field is wearing a jumper, they are redundant. A rethink needed...

Jack Leach continues after lunch. It has taken me by surprise but the new ball is only 10 overs away.

That's the dream scenario at slip, having the ball coming to your dominant hand, at knee height, at a good pace.

  4. Aus 246-5published at 70 overs

    Smith 102, Paine 9

I can't give any explanation for that drop. It was a good height. Straight to Roy in the bread basket.

It seemed to get to him a little quicker than expected.

That was a really, really manageable chance. Roy should have got that - it was a rash shot from Paine, going after a really wide ball, and it was knee height.

  6. dropped catch

Paine dropped on 9published at 69.4 overs

    No, no, no.

Tim Paine plays a hideous stroke, chasing a wide delivery and he edges to second slip.

The ball goes at a perfect height for Jason Roy but is dropped.

    Stuart Broad is absolutely furious.

England's poor bowling can be summed up by 7 maidens being bowled in 67 overs. We just cannot keep it tight. We'll be lucky to be chasing 400 at this rate.

    What is going on?!

The players re-emerge and Rory Burns is piggy backing Jofra Archer to the middle!

I'm ashamed to say that my hatred for Smith from the cheating is slowly turning into respect for his sheer class.

The big plus is it's a lovely day now in Manchester. Bright sunshine, blue skies and some fluffy white clouds.

You could say these are perfect batting conditions.

Getting BBC wicket alerts, but they almost don’t count unless it’s Smith, maybe they should have a "Smith’s out" option.

What's the best England could hope for from here? Bowling Australia out for 300?

Then you'd think they'd have to bat beyond Australia's score to have a chance of winning the Test.

There is a bit of turn which Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon will love to see. You'd assume that will only increase as the game goes on and England will probably have to bat last.

I can't for the life of me work out why Matthew Wade has played that shot.

Matthew Wade got to 16 without ever looking truly comfortable and then put forward his entry for the 'Worst Shot of the Series Award'.

    What was this?!

England did make an early breakthrough this morning. Stuart Broad clinched his third wicket of the innings by trapping Travis Head plumb in front.
