Tim Paine pulls past Jos Buttler for one, and Steve Smith is back on strike...
Craig Overton tries a bouncer that's promptly signalled wide by the umpire before a simple nudge off the hip takes Smith to 99.
Craig Overton will bowl to Steve Smith on 98...

It looks like Smith is not only locking himself in for a century but for a double.
Andrew Samson
BBC Test Match Special statistician
Steve Smith has faced 743 balls in the series. He is six minutes short of batting for 20 hours.
Run rate 3.52
Singles, singles and more singles. Steve Smith is two away from another century.
Next to me, Matthew Henry's head hits the desk.

Steve Smith being a freak aside, we just don't seem to be as on it in this Test, still not sure about the decision to drop Woakes either if I'm honest.

Whether or not Smith has a 'weakness' against left-arm spin is up for debate, but there is no doubt that when facing Leach the ticks are turned down, the ball is not hit in such unusual areas and the defence does not seem quite so impenetrable.
A simple nudge off the hip from Steve Smith takes him to 96, while Tim Paine is tempted into a half-nibble outside his off stump.
A bit of extra bounce surprises Paine, who gets squared up and the ball taps him on the glove to end the over.
I very much enjoyed Joe Root's face as he steadied himself for this catch.

I'd keep Smith over two Roots, a Roy and a Buttler. Might be persuaded to throw in a Denly too.
Andy, Nottm
Solid defence from Tim Paine as he blocks everything Jack Leach is twirling down to him.
Fifteen minutes until lunch. Can England snaffle another wicket?

Just spotted a T-shirt with the slogan ‘The Nathan Lyon school of fielding’ complete with a photo of Australia’s spinner fumbling that run out chance at Headingley. England cricket fans never more resourceful than when there are Australians to be mocked.

Say what you want about the weather, but they are serving pie, chips, mushy peas and gravy in the pavilion. That is what makes Old Trafford great.
Smith 94, Paine 3
Craig Overton tests Tim Paine out with some short teasers, and Paine knocks one around the corner to pick up a single.
Steve Smith, meanwhile, still doesn't look like getting out in this millennium.

With the batting of both sides I'd say anything over 300 is a very good score.
Michael Vaughan

Is 350 par? It is a good pitch.
Paine 2, Smith 93
Oh! A flaying drive from Steve Smith and he guides it rather edgily to gully. He comes down the pitch to his next ball and plays it just, just, past Jos Buttler at short leg.
Nervy times?
I'm sort of obsessed with Steve Smith.

It is back in the balance. Matthew Wade has just played the kind of stroke that, I am afraid to say, will get you dropped.
