I'm always amazed by the number of portaloos shipped into Old Trafford for a Test match. You don't see them anywhere else.

Joe Root decides he much prefers facing Nathan Lyon's off-spin compared to Pat Cummins' pace and promptly pats his way through a maiden.

    Great cricket.

Pat Cummins! That's an absolute snorter, the ball spitting and rising and firing up on Rory Burns, and Burns yanks one hand off the bat and plays it down towards his toes.

He's done so well to get bat on that. I'd have just flapped at it.

Rory Burns has had a bit of trouble against the short ball but he plays this one nicely from Pat Cummins, getting bat on ball and popping it down on his toes.

Matthew Wade has a bit of a chirp from short leg. Considering the shot he played in Australia's innings, I'm not sure he's best qualified to hand out batting advice.

Root has looked pretty good so far. I sense England need a long, long partnership here. These two have the patience.

  8. I'd love to be England coach one day - Flintoffpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 6 September 2019

Former all-rounder Andrew Flintoff says he would "love" to be England coach one day.

Flintoff, 41, retired from international cricket in 2009 and currently presents BBC motoring show Top Gear.

England coach Trevor Bayliss will step down at the end of this summer's Ashes series and his successor has not yet been appointed.

"Coaching is definitely an ambition," Flintoff told BBC Test Match Special.

"There are probably two or three coaching jobs I'd like - England, Lancashire or Lancashire Academy.

"I'd love to be England coach one day, just not quite yet."

    Burns 28, Root 10

Rory Burns goes deep into his crease, so deep he's almost sat on the stumps, and Nathan Lyon has his hands in the air as he almost snaffles one through the batsman's defences.

Burns gets down low and sweeps, not convincingly, but well enough for a single.

None of the England bowlers are cutting my hair. They'd try their best but it would be too short.

A yelp from Pat Cummins as he entices an inside edge out of Joe Root, the ball trickling onto Root's big toe before heading away towards the slips.

Oh! That's a play and a miss from Joe Root, tempted into a push forward, feet and head going nowhere, and that'll be a maiden.

Mitchell Starc is off and Pat Cummins is on.

It's not a bad change to make, is it?

Chris Martin. No footwork so he'd be doing all the cutting from the same place, and he'd keep having a swing at your fringe and missing.

Hazlewood is a crackerjack bowler. He bowls that line and length that is teasing and awkward. He gets a bit of bounce as well.

He gets so many balls in that awkward area like Glenn McGrath did.

Block, block and block some more from Joe Root, before he gallops through for a leg bye that Tim Paine can't collect cleanly.

Another wayward delivery down the leg side from Josh hazlewood, and Tim Paine does really well to hustle across and stop it racing away.

Mitchell Starc goes for a toe-crunching yorker and he gets clipped away nicely by Rory Burns for a couple.

Another little tickle through backward square adds another two to England's total. Lovely stuff.

Four! A full toss from Mitchell Starc, his radar waving, and Rory Burns bends the knee to get forward and stroke it through point for four.

Starc grumbles and then calls for a new pair of bowling boots.
