BBC Weather's Simon King: "It's grim - it's really grim. We're certainly going to get a delay this morning. Over the next couple of hours it will move on, but there's still a risk of the odd shower this afternoon.

"As for the weekend, it's looking more promising. But that's probably not what England fans want to hear."

I don't know if we are quite at the stage yet where England fans pray for interruptions - the batsman could score 500 yet - but the forecast rain has arrived at Old Trafford.

It was pretty miserable on my drive into Manchester this morning.

It's pretty clear we'll have a delayed start.

Yesterday there was a Steve Smith double hundred, dropped catches, wickets chalked off because of no-balls, an injured Ben Stokes and another failing England opener.

It's fair to say England have had better days.

Australia are well in command of this match after posting 497-8 declared and reducing England to 23-1.

Joe Root's side have been here before in this series. We must not write them off but another poor day could be fatal for their Ashes hopes.
