Rory Burns' knees and neck will be aching tonight if he stays in. He's having to do a lot of bobbing and weaving to get out of the way of these bouncers. This one he doesn't quite evade and it hits him on the shoulder.

When Hazlewood does go in search of something different Burns flicks him off his pads for three. Good batting. Loud cheers from the Manchester Wall.

Rory Burns pokes at a wide-ish delivery and instantly looks behind to watch the ball go into Tim Paine's gloves. He's teasing me. No edge.

It’s a bit of a maze below the party stand and easy to get the wrong staircase. “This is the one,” says one man to his mate. “A tenner it’s not,” comes the reply. Someone is about to have an expensive climb.

How many different inflatables did you bring?

I am fascinated by the amusement England cricket fans get from inflatables. Watermelons, beach balls, unicorns, dinosaurs. There was a sheep at Headingley.

Thanks Amy. I probably shouldn't say it but I will anyway.

This is going quite well for England.

One of my favourite things in cricket is when the bowler put their sunglasses on top of the umpire's hat as they get ready to bowl. It's so pleasingly polite.

Both Rory Burns and Joe Root play a few nice shots to Nathan Lyon but they can't beat the fielders, and a single is all that comes from the over.

By Sunday afternoon this pitch will be turning square. That's why first-innings runs are so important for England. They need 350 minimum.

Australia might be overdoing the short ball a bit here. Josh Hazlewood tries to bounce out Rory Burns but he can't get the line right, the ball trailing down the leg side, and Burns eventually helps a leggy gift race away for a single.

Steve Smith is doing quite a lot of arm waving from slip to Nathan Lyon. Lyon goes flatter and quicker, trying to trap Joe Root lbw, but it goes down the leg side and Tim Paine collects it neatly behind the stumps.

Turn! This last Lyon delivery spins back into Root as he shuffles deep into his crease, and he's struck just outside the line. Root shakes his head and has a suspicious look at the pitch.

This pitch is good. It is relatively slow and there is no swing yet.
