That was a high-quality cover drive and is where Mitchell Marsh should be bowling. But it brings the slips into play if he gets the shot wrong.

  3. Eng 175-4published at 57.5 overs

Indeed. Australia have only successfully overturned six out of 30 referrals. England's record is 15 successful reviews from 36.

Can the Ashes be decided on that record in the event of a tied series?

Buttler has his first boundary, a cruncher through the covers.

The ball flicked Buttler's hip. Not out.

  9. Australia reviewpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 12 September 2019

Jos Buttler is grinning but I'd say he looks nervous.

Has he gloved this behind down the leg side?

John Petrie: No doubt Root will receive criticism for not converting his 50. Just pointing out that he has again scored over 50; none of the other top four have. Neither did he give away his wicket as the other three have.

  11. Eng 171-4published at 57 overs

    Bairstow 22, Buttler 1

Jos Buttler gets off the mark in streaky fashion. Cummins' wicket-taking over ends with the ball squirting off Buttler's edge down to third man.

England need another 200 at least.

Bowled is the most decisive way to remove a batsman as a fast bowler.

When Joe Root gets to 20 he's practically guaranteed a 50. His century conversion is a massive issue though. Good player but not in the same league as the other 'fab 4' I'm afraid.

And now Jos Buttler is out for England with his side still well short of a par score.

That was a decent ball - it hit the seam, moved away and cleaned him up. Root gave the pitch a deliberate tap as he walked off.

    Root b Cummins 57 (Eng 170-4)

There'll be no Joe Root hundred today...

His luck has ran out. He's has been bowled by another beauty from Pat Cummins.

Root thinks he is unlucky. He's looking down suspiciously with the pitch and prodding in disgust. It did just move a little.

England's score ticks over for the first time since the resumption with a bye. Tim Paine should have stopped that down the leg side. Scruffy.
