It was a mixed day in the end for England. Jos Buttler has rescued them a bit but it still should go down as a missed opportunity.

England's Test side needs to be remodelled. They should identify Test-style players and stick with them.

It may mean that Ben Foakes, who looks like a classical Test keeper, comes in and someone like Jonny Bairstow misses out.

Australia coach Justin Langer, speaking to TMS: "Tim Paine went with his gut feeling and we have always got to back the captain. And at the end of the day it's not a bad position to be in.

"The first session wasn't great, we bowled a bit short and we adjusted that after lunch. It's pretty even at the end of the day.

"Mitch Marsh bowled really well today. It's always great to have that all-rounder in your side. Not just the skill of swinging the ball but also the endurance of bowling so many overs.

"Jos Butter is a great one-day cricketer and we're aware of that so we need to get him early tomorrow."

We didn't see the same consistency from Australia that has made their pace attack so dangerous in this series.

If they bowled like they did at Old Trafford, England would be all out and Australia would be batting by now.

England are in this difficult position despite Australia making a lot of mistakes during the day.

Joe Root's side failed to take advantage.

Root himself was dropped three times and Sam Curran was reprieved when he was out lbw off a no-ball.

Steve Smith will probably get in and get another hundred. That doesn't change. But England should have been on course for 400 to at least put some scoreboard pressure on Smith.

A combination of a lack of application, poor thinking and some decent bowling means England have collapsed again.

Australia will be delighted with this position given they actually had a poor day.

More from Jos Buttler to TMS: "Jack Leach has been a great mate from the beginning so it's nice to play with him and he's trying to bat like Marcus Trescothick out there!

"We've just got to try and push on tomorrow. The pitch is not an absolute belter - Australia certainly didn't think it was or they would've batted first. It's a good cricket wicket - you can get rewards if you bowl well, runs if you bat well.

"We were always going to bat so we were happy with the toss. We'll just try to get as many as we can."

I really like that honesty from Buttler, saying he's not enjoyed batting in this Ashes. Australia have bowled really well to him and it's been hard. It's really good to see him play an innings like this.

England batsman Jos Buttler, speaking to TMS: "It's nice to contribute a little bit. The boys batted really well in the morning and we got ourselves into a fantastic position but could not capitalise.

"Both sides are feeling a long series with a quick turnaround between Tests so that's why the intensity goes up and down. Australia are a really good bowling attack and asked questions all day. it's frustrating for us not being able to capitalise on our start.

"With the new ball not being far away I thought it was the best time to go for it and I was just trying to have some fun too. Batting has been hard work and not enjoyable this series so I wanted to take the shackles off and play with a smile on my face."

Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was just cramp. I had a fair bit of Adrenalin running through my body and I probably haven't bowled a spell that long ever.

"I was like a kid at Christmas this morning. It can be a long tour when you are not playing. I just wanted to try and get an opportunity at some stage and it was nice to produce today.

"The ball came out reasonably well. I just wanted to come in today and take a few wickets."

Even despite those poor early shots, England got into a decent position at 170-3.

There was then a collapse of 5-56 after tea which it could come back to haunt England.

England have to hope that 300 is a par score but it doesn't look like it to me. One of Australia's top order should get a century on this.

Australia looked a bit hungover from Old Trafford. But this is what England do. Even in decent batting conditions they only ever reach this kind of score.

Anyone can get out cheaply. But Rory Burns and Joe Denly got a start but got out. Ben Stokes the same. There were some poor strokes. It's the story of England's batting.

They've missed a great opportunity. They should be 270-4 after today and someone should be 100 not out.

Almost all of the England top order got a start but so far no-one has gone on. That will be the disappointment.

There was some good bowling but in favourable batting conditions there were too many poor shots.

Smith gave Leach a pat on the back as they made it off the field. I wonder if that was a little word about those celebrations at Old Trafford.

England were 226-8 when Jack Leach joined Jos Buttler in the middle.

Leach's resistance and Buttler's six-hitting has just about kept England in it but it feels like this should have been a 290-3 kind of day.
