These two look like they're wanting to dig in and bat a long time. They need to do that too because of the uncertainty in the batting order below them.

Re 14.36: I'm calling Siddle out on his 20 bananas a day.. I heard this before the last Ashes series in England and foolishly took on a bet with my boss that I could eat 20 a day for a week. I lasted one day and was a total mess by the end of the day. My boss wasn't pleased when he turned up the next day with 20 bananas that I refused to eat! No way he can do that and play cricket all day!

    Root 57, Bairstow 22

Speaking of Smith, he's shadow batting a second slip by pretending to play a forward defence. He might not be batting for another 20 hours or so! He never stops.

Sir Geoffrey is purring on TMS as Bairstow solidly blocks out Cummins' over.

    Joe Root - 50s: 44. 100s: 16.

    Steve Smith - 50s: 26. 100s 26.

Root needs to improve that statistic if he's going to be up there with the best in the world.

On his day Joe Root is clearly capable of matching (if not surpassing) Steve Smith. If he gets the consistency he'll be hitting double centuries on a regular basis.

The ball continues to move a little for Mitchell Marsh, despite being over 50 overs old. Marsh shows good control to keep the ball full. Root is watchful in response.

Marsh needs to keep it up there, with the swing he gets, and put a man on the drive at cover. Bowl like that for three or four overs and see what happens. The modern day player can't resist.

It strange how rarely these series are drawn. That's what England are hoping for from this match of course.

1972 was the last drawn Ashes series.

Mitchell Marsh has bowled well today, finding the most movement out of any of the bowlers. Tim Paine is sticking with him after tea.

For all of England's batting woes, I suspect if we swapped bowling attacks with Australia we would have won the Ashes. Cummins has had as much influence as Steve Smith this series... and may have even got him out below 100!

I saw a great stat earlier saying that Jonny Bairstow averages 7.67 against pace deliveries that would hit the stumps in Test cricket since he became a regular opener in England's ODI team.

    It is err... not good.

None of the balls in this over threaten the timbers. Bairstow lets the over go by.

I was speaking to Graham Thorpe about England's batting and I said it feels like if there's four dot balls, they'll start to look to score and then get out. I don't expect them to play like I did but you do have to not give your wicket away.

    Root 57, Bairstow 22

Pat Cummins is starting us off in a sedate atmosphere after tea. Bairstow gets behind the first ball solidly.

You give a Kohli or a Smith a chance, they make you pay. Joe Root has to do that - he has to go big.

Root has had his chances? Can he capitalise?

  18. Postpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 12 September 2019

So that leaves Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow in the middle - England's two Yorkshiremen.

They need to go on and bat, bat and bat in this final session.

Like Burns, Ben Stokes also fell in disappointing fashion.

Big runs are the order of the day today. England need someone to cash in like Steve Smith would (and maybe will) on this flat pitch.

After a good start, Stokes chipped a catch off a top edge to gully.

Rory Burns will be disappointed with his dismissal. He had played nicely once again before he chipped a tame catch to mid-wicket.
