The conditions have got better for bowling in the last 30 minutes but England should not be bowled out by some 82mph seam bowling. Marsh has bowled well, better than I have ever seen him bowl, but England have to be better.

    Woakes lbw b M Marsh 2 (Eng 207-7)

Dearie me. Mitchell Marsh - yes Mitchell Marsh - has a fourth.

It's full and swinging and Chris Woakes can't get bat on it. The umpire doesn't really think about raising the finger.

Woakes has a hopeful chat with Buttler about a review but quickly turns back to the pavilion.

Gareth Barnes: England do know they can bat for more than a day right?

  6. Eng 205-6published at 65.3 overs

Chris Woakes is off the mark with a couple because, bizarrely, Australia have a deep point fielder at 205-6.

Is it me or is this completely unsurprising? Of course England are collapsing on a flat pitch having done some hard yards earlier in the day. It's what they do! And yet it never stops being frustrating, watching players that you know are capable of better, playing poor shots, throwing away their wickets and handing the initiative back to an Australia side who, two hours ago, looked as though they were still recovering from the post-Old Trafford party.

Mitchell Marsh has 3-31 in a Test. Who saw that coming? He has bowled unchanged for an hour tea.

  9. Eng 203-6published at 65 overs

    Buttler 17, Woakes 0

Jos Buttler is stern-faced. He knows the job is nowhere near done. He lets the ball go for the majority of Hazlewood's over and then drills the final ball for four.

    England limp beyond 200.

This performance is actually more embarrassing than the earlier collapses, because this is a perfect batting wicket and Australia have bowled poorly at times. And even then, England just keep leaking wickets...

And now Chris Woakes joins Jos Buttler in the middle. Pat Cummins' spell is over. Josh Hazlewood is back.

It doesn't look like England have got anywhere near enough runs.

The beans were going there with Sam Curran. He'd hit a couple of fine shots away but that was the carrot delivery and he went after it.

Australia have lured England in to doing what the tourists want.

    S Curran c Smith b M Marsh 15 (Eng 199-6)

It's only a brief stay for Sam Curran. This one is out.

I'm not sure this was the way to play to be honest. With the ball swinging Mitchell Marsh tempts Curran with a full ball and he has a wild slash. Rather than nailing it like the last one, Curran edges a sharp chance to Steve Smith at second slip.

He threw the kitchen sink at that. A catchable height but good luck catching that! Like a rocket!

  16. Eng 197-5published at 63.1 overs

Sam Curran is going to try to do Sam Curran things! This could be a fun watch. He has absolutely thwacked Mitchell Marsh to the boundary with a cut.

Tight but it was a no-ball...

  18. Eng 193-5published at 63 overs

Edged... Four runs to Jos Buttler.

I know it has been said a lot this summer but Pat Cummins is an outstanding bowler. He could very easily have dismissed Buttler here. Instead the ball goes in the air wide of gully.

Absolutely symptomatic of this England Test side. On a good batting track, against good bowlers, not one of the top five gets a score that will influence the match.

The floodlights are coming on as the clouds roll in a little. It's a little gloomy. Curran punches Cummins off the back foot for three. That was a much better shot than those in Cummins' previous over.
