I'm not saying Jack Leach is the people's hero, but he got a bigger round of applause for his one run in that first over than Jos Buttler did for that stonking back-foot swish for four.

That was handsome.
Buttler 68, Leach 11
Short and wide from Pat Cummins and Jos Buttler absolutely leathers it for four! Lovely stuff.

I am full of admiration for Jack Leach.
It's the bluff as Pat Cummins pitches it up, Jack Leach meets it with a firm drive and takes the single!
Jos Buttler walks across his stumps, misses and the ball deflects away off the top part of his pad for a leg bye.
Jack Leach has two balls to face.
And two short legs in place...
Pat Cummins to Jos Buttler first up and Buttler drives down to mid-on for no run.

We have a fascinating period of play coming up. What is Jos Buttler going to do?

Ironic, really, that it's September and we're going to be playing on one of the nicest days of the year. It is pleasantly warm at The Oval, with people slapping on suncream and floppy hats.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special
First up England have to play themselves in. 300 has to be the first target. Leach should face as few balls a possible and Buttler should play himself in and then go through the gears.
350 should have been the initial target and then they could have looked at 400 and 450.
That is not going to happen. 300 is the bare minimum but that is below par.
You're right, Josh.
If only the pitches were more English, with more green grass on them...no, wait, not that.
But not fast and bouncy either.
But not turning either.
But...but...

England have really struggled against slow seam. Think Colin de Grandhomme, think Tim Murtagh, and now Mitch Marsh.

The Oval press box is reminding us of happier times.

I think England would bite your hand off if you offered them 50 more runs this morning. That still feels short of par, though.

NFS - Normal for Smith. He shadow bats in the shower.
As if the collapse wasn't enough there was that added dread at the back of every England fan's mind yesterday - how much is Steve Smith going to make on this pitch?

Play hasn’t even started and I’ve already had my favourite encounter of the day - an army mechanic and an Australian documentary maker discussing the merits of the Otley Run and Leeds on a bank holiday weekend.
Hello by the way. Welcome to live coverage of day two of the final Ashes Test between England and Australia at The Oval.
What can England muster today?

For England there was that all-too-familiar collapsing feeling as they tumbled from 103-1 to 226-8.
There is, however, hope in the form of great mates Jos Buttler and Jack 'The Wall' Leach at the crease.
They put on 45 together last night to carry England to 271-8 and Buttler will resume on 64 this morning, hoping to face as many balls as possible while trusting Leach to keep out one or two per over.
England should have batted Australia out of the game but Buttler at least gives them a chance to post a competitive total.
