I wonder what Tim Paine is thinking. They got the selection wrong and the decision at the toss.

If he had decided to have a bat we might have been stood here in different circumstances.

  2. 'Mission accomplished'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 15 September 2019

Australia captain Tim Paine on TMS: "The urn is what we came to get. We knew the rules around the Ashes and a draw is good enough. Mission accomplished which is fantastic.

"I don't think we ran out of gas. We were outplayed and dropped catches."

Would he have changed his decision at the toss? "I honestly wouldn't have. I felt we bowled well enough. If we had taken our chances we would have bowled them out for under 200."

On his team's turnaround since the ball-tampering scandal: "It started before this Ashes series. It was there in the lead-up before the World Cup. From where we have come from to make a World Cup semi-final and retain the Ashes is a really big achievement from what this team has been through."

Tom: Enjoyed that Ashes series a lot. Aussies probably should have won it 3-1 on overall reflection, but if it wasn’t for the Lords rain we probably would have won 3-2. Cricket, eh?

'I am just worn out now'.

    Can really relate to that.

Pretty sure this summer of cricket actually started last year.

Australia batsman Steve Smith, speaking to TMS: "I am proud of the way I have played throughout the series and to help Australia bring the urn home. We came to win the Ashes and unfortunately weren’t able to do that. It is not the fairytale finish we were after.

"I am tired and need a rest mentally and physically. I am just worn out now. I have loved the last four and half months. It has been great fun. I am proud of the way I have been able to play. Hopefully I can have a rest and have a big summer back home.

"I noticed I got applause. Thank you. It was a really nice reception I got today. It has been a great couple of months."

More from Joe Root on Jofra Archer: "He is phenomenal, very skilful with high pace and he creates atmosphere in the ground. This Ashes series we have felt the support massively from the crowd. He has jumped on that. He has made things happen and has turned the game at times. He has made a huge impact.

On Ben Stokes: "Ben seems to be getting better and better. He has been through a huge amount and put it all behind him. He is born and made for the big occasions and the summer is proof of it. What he has achieved is outstanding. It is slightly disappointing we are not on that stage lifting it for him.”

We should congratulate Australia. They had two convincing victories and apart from Ben Stokes they would have won another one. It is fair they are celebrating with the Ashes.

I don't think Langer will need time to think that way.

He's chewing gum but it might as well be a wasp.

The Australia coach does not look happy on the balcony.

Justin Langer in time will be gutted that they have produced the worst performance of the series at the last hurdle. Tim Paine is a great guy. He deserves a great amount of credit. He got things wrong this week but if you analyse it over the series Australia have been the better team.

Australia now stride over to cover their travelling fans in champagne.

More from England captain Joe Root: "I thought we were excellent this week from the very start. Having lost the toss to play the way we did was great. Today was a really good effort too on a difficult wicket.

"Jofra makes things happen and he's backed up by some very skillful bowlers. Sam Curran came in for this Test and bowled well and Stuart Broad had been brilliant throughout.

"We've not always been at our best throughout the series but we've battled very hard but congratulations to Tim and his team, they've been brilliant."

Ben Stokes on his captain Joe Root: "There is no better man in the changing room to lead this team. He is a young captain and has learnt along the way. You are always going to keep learning he will take a lot from this as a captain."

Joe Root and Tim Paine take to the stage together to lift the bigger silver trophy to mark a drawn series.

The little brown urn is what really matters though.

And Paine then lifts it above his head as the champagne starts to spray.

  14. 'A weird feeling'published at 18:50 British Summer Time 15 September 2019

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, speaking to TMS: "It is a weird feeling at the end. We are very happy with what we managed to do in this game but we still couldn't win the Ashes. With this Test championship every game means something and we did fantastically well to draw the series. It is a very fair scorecard with how it has been played.

"At start of summer everyone was so excited with what we had ahead, now the summer has come to an end it has been incredible to be part of as a player."

Steve Smith has been joy to watch. From where he was at Edgbaston, that first innings was special. His team were gone at 122-8 and the way he shepherded Peter Siddle and played with so much control. That was one of the great Test innings. He has been a joy to watch.

Australia batsman Steve Smith: "It meant a lot to have that reception from the crowd today.

"It's been an amazing couple of months with the World Cup and the Ashes, the cricket has been spectacular.

"The series has ebbed and flowed. I've loved every minute and I'm really proud of how I've been able to performance for Australia and to bring the urn home.

"You always have to believe you can chase it down, the middle of the wicket still played pretty well and Matthew Wade proved if you apply yourself you can get runs. Unfortunately he didn't have enough of us to stick around.

"I saw Jofra last year in the IPL and saw he is a raw talent. He has performed exceptionally well in Test cricket straight away and that hasn't surprised me. He's got a lot of skills and a really bright future.

"You always want to get better as a player. Keep working hard and nothing is ever too much."

Janet Hopper: Steve Smith has been imperious in this series. Head and shoulders above anyone else in the side. He has carried this Australian side. Well played.

Joe Root speaking to TMS: "It is Ashes cricket. Every game you turn up you are playing for your country. It means so much to everyone. You can see at different periods someone wrestled it back into our favour. For the first time in this series we felt in front of the game all of the way through. We have to get used to it more and more."

I think we might see a change in approach the Test team takes. Maybe the players will miss the one-day games if they are playing all three formats. The Test team needs a little bit of TLC and Joe Root is the skipper to take them forward.

  20. Man of the seriespublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 15 September 2019

England man of the series, Ben Stokes: "It was disappointing after Manchester to know we couldn't get the Ashes back but we came here with a lot of pride and looking to draw the series.

"I don't think you can ever look back and ask what if we'd done this or done that different. It has been a great series that has ebbed and flowed and that's showed in the end result. I think it's a fair result between two evenly matched and competitive teams as Ashes cricket always is and everyone has been treated to a great series

"I'll look back on Headingley in a few years' time with fond memories probably but I'd swap it for winning for the Ashes still.

"Everyone who's come in has stuck their hand up and shown they can do a good job and what they're about. Rory Burns has been knocking on the door for the long time and he's shown this summer what he's capable of."

Asked if Joe Root is the right man to take England forward: "100%"
