Afghanistan lost early wickets but you don't want to just hand it over and not bat through and that's what they did.

They could have added another 30-50 and made it a bit more difficult for Australia.

  8. 'I feared the worst'published at 19:40 British Summer Time 1 June 2019

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib: "Australia are a champion side so you can't have any mistakes. When we didn't have a good start I did fear the worst slightly. We were on the back foot but Rahmat Shah batted well.

"With the ball Hamid Hassan bowled well, he suits English conditions and that's good for the team. It's a good sign.

"I'm hoping we get some spin by the middle of the tournament. Credit goes to Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman for how they bowled on this sort of wicket."

Australia captain Aaron Finch: "There’s a bit of nerves, we’ve been training for so long, we were probably ready to go three or four days ago. So it is good to get a win first up and get those nerves out of the way early.

On David Warner: "It was a very important innings. He was struggling with his timing early on but he kept hanging in there. That was great for him to kick on and do really well for us.

On whether net run rate was a consideration: "I think when you get into a winning position then you think about that, it’s important you don’t look too far ahead. They have some very good spinners so if you don’t take that into consideration you are playing with fire."

Aaron Finch at the top of the order getting off to a quick start and David Warner getting runs, it'll end up being key I think.

Australia batsman David Warner: "It was a great win, a good start and now we just have to keep this ball rolling.

"There were a few nerves getting into the groove and the full intensity of training but I soon relaxed when Finchy got going in the middle

"I’ve been playing Twenty20 cricket for the past few months and not really moving my feet so it was good to get back into the rhythm.

"It’s about getting this first victory and moving onto the West Indies. There’s a great buzz and energy about this team at present, we’ve got one on the board and we move on."

David Warner is still getting back into the groove.

He had a good IPL but getting back into the Australian camp is a different beast.

So it was all about David Warner in the end. Here is one of his many wonderfully-timed late cuts for four.

Australia will be reasonably happy with that.

It was convincing on the scoreboard but they have could have done it a lot quicker.

Aaron Finch had a good day, I thought his fielding positions, particularly for Adam Zampa, were spot on. And he led the cause with the bat.

David Warner raises his bat as he strides off the field. It wasn't his most explosive innings but it proved the backbone to Australia's win.

It means little to the overall result but it's a wicket all the same. Steve Smith flails at a wide one and edges it straight to short third man. Boos great Smith as he walks off.
