  1. Afg 66-2published at 12 overs

    Wicket maiden for Lockie Ferguson.

He almost makes it a double wicket maiden with an absolute jaffa off the final delivery. It turns Hashmatullah Shahidi inside out but he does well to withdraw his bat at the final second.

  2. How's stat?!published at 14:22 British Summer Time 8 June 2019

Phil Long has just said on TMS that in World Cup cricket, Afghanistan's best second-wicket partnership is eight runs. Eight?

    That's a fantastic stat.

Lockie Ferguson gets good bounce, he has pace about him and that's what did for the batsman.

  4. wicket

    Noor Ali c Lathan b Ferguson 31 (Afg 66-2)

    One brings two.

It's not the best delivery from Lockie Ferguson will ever bowl but it's effective as Noor Ali strangles a leg-side delivery behind to Tom Latham to perish for 31.

New Zealand are right back in this now.

  5. Afg 66-1published at 11 overs

A dot finishes Neesham's first over.

Here are the three boundaries that Hazratullah Zazai hit in the first over. It was an entertaining 34 off 28 balls from the opener.

The issue was always going to be what will Hazratullah do after 10 overs? The fielding restrictions are relaxed, there are more areas New Zealand can cover and where potentially he could get out. This time he hit against the wind and picked out the fielder.

But he is in the team to get them off to a start so it could be a case of job done.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 10.5 overs

    Hazratullah c Munro b Neesham 34 (Afg 66-1)

    There's the breakthrough!

It's wide from Jimmy Neesham and Hazratullah throws his hands at it but only manages to pick out Colin Munro on the point boundary.

    New Zealand needed that.

  8. Afg 65-0published at 10.2 overs

Noor Ali Zadran looks like he enjoys hitting the ball straight. He hits a third beautiful straight drive to move to 30.

This is a wonderful start from Afghanistan. Their thoughts would have been, we need to put a score on the board and then our bowlers can defend it. The batting is the key and they are bang on track now - any side would take 61-0 after 10 when being asked to bat first.

Matt Henry - who I've been campaigning to have replaced for the last few overs - is replaced by Jimmy Neesham.

  12. Afg 61-0published at 10 overs

Not the best of starts from Lockie Ferguson with two boundaries conceded.

The first ball is worked fine for four before Noor Ali Zadran bisects the off side field for his fourth boundary.

Nine from the over and Afghanistan's powerplay, without a doubt.

This has been a very impressive batting performance by an Afghanistan side who were put in.

  15. Afg 51-0published at 9 overs

Short again from the final delivery and Hazratullah crunches a pull shot but is restricted to one by a good stop by the sliding mid-wicket fielder.

That has to be the end of Matt Henry. He's gone for 38 from his first five overs.

  16. Afg 50-0published at 8.4 overs

Matt Henry - who I was expecting to cause Afghanistan all sorts of problems today - has quite frankly been awful.

It's short and wide this time and Hazratullah just throws his hands at it and sends it crashing through the covers for four more.

  17. 6 runs

    Afg 46-0published at 8.2 overs

Matt Henry continues for New Zealand, but Kane Williamson might wish he hadn't after this.

It's a floaty delivery from the quick and Hazratullah just clips him over the square leg boundary with the minimum of fuss.

    That's landed on the roof.

It was nice to see a bit of a local sporting celebrity in distance runner Jo Pavey here today in her role as a World Cup ambassador.

Jo, a Devon girl from just a bit further down the M5, admits this is the first time she's seen a World Cup match in this country having checked out a few games in South Africa back in 2003 in the middle of her training.

Jo was very diplomatic when being interviewed on the big screen by saying she hopes both sides put in a strong performance today.

Wonder which of these two will cross the finish line first...

  19. Afg 39-0published at 8 overs

Another economical over from Boult with just two singles - one coming from that dropped catch - added to the total.

It went hard to Ross Taylor and he would have seen it late. He got a full hand on it but it was bursting away from him at full stretch.
