Ankur Desai, India fan: "Growing up, it was always about this game. If you don't win the World Cup, then make sure you beat Pakistan. It was far more important to me than beating England, Australia or anyone else.

"As I got older it's a bit different. It's more about the curiosity because we play each other less frequently, hence it's hyped up even more.

"I actually quite like the Pakistan side. They're such mavericks and exciting to watch. Nowadays, winning the tournament is more important to me than beating Pakistan. It's about adding those stars to the India shirt.

"It's great that it's in the north west of England, where there are a lot of Pakistani fans. Usually Indian fans buy up a lot of the tickets, so it will be good to see an equal number of supporters."

Aatif Nawaz, Pakistan fan: "Before the game, I may be like 'oh it's just a game, it doesn't matter who wins, we're brothers, divided by a fake line in the sand, and we're the same colour and unity' … but then Pakistan will lose and it feels like the end of the world, like your wife is going to leave you, you'll never get approved for a credit card, a mortgage, you're going to lose your job, every one is going to hate you.

"But in honesty, the further we get away from partition, the more genuine friendships develop between players and cultures, and there's acceptance.

"Yes, the politics thing is still there, but Joe Indian and Joe Pakistani don't give a monkeys about all that. We just love the sport."

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed: "We will bowl first. India v Pakistan is a big game but we just have to focus on playing our best game."

India captain Virat Kohli: "We would have bowled first to be honest. The conditions are good for bowling but the wicket looks nice. There's a lot of attention outside of the rope but when you enter the field, it's about applying the basics of the game."

The ground is about half full - the queues to get in are insane - but it sounds like it's packed. I'd say it's mostly India fans, although there's a fair yell for Sarfaraz as he wins the toss. Virat Kohli is a man who walks around like a rockstar and he gets the sort of the reception The Beatles used to get back in their heyday - an extended scream that's so loud he has to yell at Ramiz Raja so he can conduct the post-toss interview.

Kohli says India would have had a bowl as well. I can hardly hear either captain talk such is the noise inside the ground.

What an absolute nightmare. This thread will be blowing up on Mumsnet

My cousin's getting married TODAY of all days! You can tell he isn't a big cricketing fan! I'm going to have to watch the game under the covers of the table and hope I can catch Pakistan taking a few wickets! I didn't expect today to be a commentary or a radio day. He definitely owes me one. Come on Pakistan!

Now, media centres during a World Cup are busy at the best of times. Even by those standards, though, this is jam-packed. Old Trafford had around 600 media requests for this match - there's radio and TV from India, Pakistan and the UK, as well as a whole host of written journos. I've somehow managed to get a seat. To my right, a photographer is laid across a flight of stairs, trying to send his snaps back to his agency.

Goodness me it's loud inside Old Trafford. Quite how they are going to keep this up all day I don't know - but I bet they will!

    Family

There’s a genuine family atmosphere on the walk to the ground. My tram had two young girls, face painted, wrapped in flags, heading to the ground with their parents. On the walk in, there was a young family, all dressed in Pakistani green. In one hand the young son had a Pakistan flag; in the other, an umbrella. Sensible, in Manchester.
