  1. Sri Lankan shockerpublished at 18:45 British Summer Time 21 June 2019

A World Cup shock then to end the week.

England only needed to chase down 233 to beat Sri Lanka but they couldn't do it.

  2. 'I won't read the riot act'published at 18:41 British Summer Time 21 June 2019

More from Eoin Morgan: "Both sides struggled to bat. Naturally for us our method is to go to the aggressive option and hopefully we will bounce on back Tuesday with a similar attitude.

"The guys are extremely disappointed. It is a matter of learning and taking it into Tuesday. I don’t tend to read the riot act. It is important we learn from this."

The good news is that it was only 24 hours ago that I was moaning that there would be far too many dead rubbers in the next fortnight. Now maybe every game will count...

England have to see off Australia, India and New Zealand to get a semi-final. Cricket is a funny game and I can see Bangladesh beating Afghanistan, India and Pakistan.

I wouldn't say Eoin Morgan was chippy in that news conference but there were some very, very short answers. What can he really say though?

  6. 'There were lots of key wickets'published at 18:35 British Summer Time 21 June 2019

England captain Eoin Morgan was asked if this wicket of Moeen was the key one.

"Every wicket was key as we bat all the way down," he said.

"Guys average 35, 40 at six or seven. Any one of them could have won us the game."

Eoin Morgan in his news conference: "Look at the basics of a run chase, partnerships are important and we struggled. We weren't good enough to win the game.

"We resort to aggressive, smart, positive cricket when we lose. Let's hope that's the case against Australia on Tuesday."

Ben Stokes played brilliantly. I thought it was a really smart innings. Two or three of the other options weren't the smartest. England have to understand where they went wrong and learn from it.

  9. 'Root wicket was key'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 21 June 2019

Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne: "It was a close one, we were under pressure but it was teamwork in the end - all the batters and bowlers did great work.

"We thought this wicket looked like a 300 pitch but it was slower than we though. We knew we couldn't get 300, so wanted 250-275 until we lost some wickets but Angelo Mathews batted really well.

"With a score on the board the bowlers knew what to do on this wicket.

"The Root wicket was the turning point. We were not confident but thought we would go for the review and thankfully for us that was the turning point."

Here's the moment Sri Lanka wrapped up victory...

Eoin Morgan on whether this is a big blow to England's semi-final hopes: "Not at all. It's a long, long tournament and there are huge opportunities in every game. We have three more to go.

"Australia is always a match you look to first in the World Cup fixtures and playing at Lord's will make it all the more satisfying."

England captain Eoin Morgan: "In the chase we didn't do the basics of getting substantial partnerships going. We had a couple of good individual performances but Sri Lanka thoroughly deserved to win. We didn't do enough to win the game and even if we had nicked it then it would have been us robbing the game with an outstanding individual performance."

More from Eoin Morgan: "Both sides adapted as well as they could to conditions.

"It was challenging to get a flow with the bat, it was more of a bowler's day and there will be some more of those in the tournament so we need to get better at adapting to that.

"You have to dust yourself off quickly. We tend to come back aggressively, it's been a strong point of ours."

So England lose 2 games against teams not expected to do too much. Unless they show more than they have, I can only see them giving NZ any trouble. And what has happened to Buttler? One good batting performance in every 10 games? Not good enough. Our team sport mentality - all teams - has to match our skill level, and it's miles behind.

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We lost it probably more so with the bat than with the ball. Our bowlers adapted to the conditions and we kept them to a chasable total.

"There was lack of substantial partnerships. A couple of individual performances nearly got us over the line.

"It's frustrating. We are going to lose games, they are all tough matches. It's about fronting up for the next game against Australia and bouncing back well on Tuesday."

The key will be as a team England will know their performance today hasn't been good enough to win the game and it is a game they should be winning.

Trevor Bayliss talks lot about smart cricket and at times they did not play smart cricket.

They don't make excuses. Eoin Morgan will call it as he sees it. There won't be any shouting or finger pointing but there will be some quiet conversations with some players about their modes of dismissals.

Everyone calm down. Even if England lose all three tough games, it would require Sri Lanka or Bangladesh winning two or any of the other teams outside of the top four winning three of their remaining games for us not to make the semis. Yes, it's worrying that we can't close tight games, but it's highly unlikely that we won't make it through.

The Sri Lankans are a team who thrive on confidence. After the two early wickets you could see they thought they could win the game. You have to give full credit to Sri Lanka.

Mohan Jadeja: England are still good to make semis. Remember Bangladesh will need three more wins to overtake England.

Paul: No matter what the sport, England teams always have this kind of result waiting in the wings.
