The Pakistan defeat was a different kind of chase. England had to whack to 350. What this has proven is the one downfall of this England side. We have all said that if England play smart cricket then they will be the team to beat win but they didn't.

Just the best three sides left for England then. A bottom-heavy fixture list may yet be their undoing.

Two defeats already. Let's be brutally honest we lack the backbone India and the Aussies have even if we are at home.

Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga: "We know how hard Ben Stokes hits it, he got two or three boundaries but we just kept bowling our stock ball.

"We stuck to our basic plan - line and length, no loose balls and add in some variations and bouncers.

"We want to carry on the momentum and confidence into the other matches."

How many points will England, or anyone, need to get fourth? Hard to say but England have now lost two. You wouldn't have thought they could afford many more defeats.

England have not played with any smartness. The game was won when Moeen Ali hit a six and he tried to hit another. I hope we are not in an era where in the dressing you can't say "that is not good enough".

A small pocket of Sri Lankans are making plenty of noise still inside Headingley. What a win that is - and it leaves them within two points of England.

All the talk was of the top four being a closed shop. Maybe not...

I did not expect Sri Lanka to beat England today. The way they have played, the turmoil in their administration and the players are not too sure who will be playing.

Si Lomas: Can't blame Wood there, three all rounders showing zero brains. Stokes proved what was possible in last wicket partnership alone if just had some support.

Just one of a good few rank shots played by England today. You win or you learn, as the nonsense saying goes in sport. There's plenty to learn from that batting display...

David, Derby: I think England are going to struggle to make the semis with the three games they have left.

England, remember, play Australia, India and New Zealand in their final three games.

    Wood c K Perera b Pradeep 0 (Eng 212 all out)

A peach from Nuwan Pradeep, fired down the corridor of uncertainty and Mark Wood can't help but prod at it.

The ball flicks the outside edge and Kusal Perera completes the catch.

Ben Stokes is stranded at the other end on a courageous 82 not out.

What a stellar performance in the field by Sri Lanka.
