England are picking the fielders out and you can see the frustration creeping in; even for Ben Stokes who has only faced a few deliveries.

Sam Jarvis: This is why England won’t win the World Cup. Batting first, on a pitch as flat as the M1 motorway, in sunny weather and they’ll easily score 400. Chasing a competitive score on a slow wicket and they buckle under pressure. Very one dimensional side.

    Target 233

Isuru Udana sends it down at just 62mph but Joe Root picks it and knocks it away for a single.

That's the only run from the over, mind.

England need to knock it and run - don't play the forceful shot. The pitch has told us that won't work.

  6. Eng 76-3published at 20 overs

    Root 40, Stokes 0

Joe Root taps off his pads for two before picking up a single that takes him to 40.

Ben Stokes drives off the back foot but still can't get off the mark, finding the fielder each time.

The captains didn't read it right at the toss either, both saying it was a brilliant deck to bat on.

I don't think we read this pitch right in the Sri Lanka innings. There's something in there for the bowlers.

A Sri Lanka fan has just danced past me shouting 'only Jos Buttler left now!' I didn't have the heart to burst his bubble.

We've got a game on our hands now. What a catch that is!

    Morgan c&b Udana 21 (Eng 73-3)

    What a stunning catch!

Eoin Morgan punches a low full toss down the ground but he's cracked it too close to Isuru Udana, who pulls off a superb take with his fingers pointing out to his right.

Morgan was actually trying to work that through mid-wicket.

Just as Morgan looked to be settling in for the long haul, he's gone. Nervy times for England.

Isuru Udana gets a slower ball on to Eoin Morgan's pads. Appeal but not given.

The England skipper got a thick inside edge on that.

Are there two batsmen from the same team in the World Cup who you would rather have in this situation than Joe Root and Eoin Morgan?

Big appeal from Thisara Perera for caught behind against Eoin Morgan.

Nothing doing. And no review. Replays show it sailed past the bat.

It is a dry surface. Sri Lanka will bowl quite a few cutters and catchers in front of the eye-line will be good positions for both of these players.

Is James Vince the new Mark Ramprakash? Exceptional at county level but for some inexplicable reason, never gets going internationally.

  20. Eng 68-2published at 17 overs

    Target 233

Shot! Joe Root clips it crisply through mid-wicket and gives two fielders the thankless task of chasing a ball that teases them all the way into the rope.

A fine way to go to a drinks break.
