Henry will be delighted with that. It was a shortish ball outside off stump, but Roach's hands were away from his body and he got a fine edge rather than a thick edge, which would have gone wider.

Roach has had a reasonable day, and has shown the rest of the tail-enders it is possible to bat out there.

    Roach c Latham b Henry 14 (WI 211-8)

That should settle any lingering New Zealand nerves.

Kemar Roach had looked pretty comfortable but chases a short-ish one from Matt Henry, trying to cut it away but instead sending a fine edge through to Matt Henry.

West Indies needed Roach to take it deep with Carlos Brathwaite to stand any chance.

This is a record eight-wicket partnership for West Indies at a World Cup - beating the 45 by Jason Holder and Denesh Ramdin against South Africa at Sydney in 2015.

  4. WI 211-7published at 38 overs

Need 81 runs from 72 balls

Mitchell Santner was whacked for two mighty sixes by these batsmen earlier but is a lot more accurate on his return, conceding just two singles.

You couldn't say in the last three or four overs that the West Indies look in trouble. They're playing with the full face of the bat.

  6. WI 209-7published at 37 overs

    Brathwaite 40, Roach 13

Matt Henry was targeted by Chris Gayle earlier on but will be much happier bowling to Kemar Roach and Carlos Brathwaite.

He duly concedes just one from his seventh over.

As a WI fan, this is not a surprise. This squad never had enough proper batsmen willing to play long innings. Holder's obsession with chasing every game when we can't bat properly was also not wise. Major changes required to WI's mindset in their batting approach.

Lockie Ferguson restores some control, just conceding two singles.

Kemar Roach is handling him pretty well though.

In the interval between innings, I was sitting down with Andy Roberts, Deryck Murray and Curtly Ambrose. They said, when asked what you'd like to see from the West Indies (apart from a win of course), that they'd like to see some smart cricket. Don't try to make something out of nothing.

But West Indies have been the architects of their own demise today. The top order and middle order have created a difficulty for these lower order players.

A poor over from Colin de Grandhomme, and an expensive one.

  11. WI 206-7published at 35 overs

    Brathwaite 38, Roach 12

Ropey over from CDG, straying down leg again off the last and the same result as Brathwaite clips it for four.

    That's 10 from the over.

Colin de Grandhomme strays onto the pads and Carlos Brathwaite tucks it fine for four. That's the 200 up.

Just a run a ball needed. Shame about the wickets, eh?

The camera was panning round, there's plenty of West Indies fans in the crowd - all the teams have been so well supported, so it's a pity that we haven't seen too many close games in the group stage.

  18. WI 188-7published at 33.1 overs

Carlos Brathwaite heaves the returning Lockie Ferguson into the covers towards Kane Williamson.

Kemar Roach sets off and is sent back and Williamson throws at the stumps...but misses.

Roach would've been out by yards. The Kiwis do seem to be missing the stumps a lot recently - they spurned several run out chances against South Africa.

Ben: The West Indies problem is that when Gayle is on form and playing well, the bloke at the other end tries to play the same way, when really they should play like Boycott for a while and just let the big man do what he does best!

Stephen Taylor: The West Indies rely on Gayle too often with the bat to score 100-150 and when he gets out they lose belief and heart. Get Gayle out and the West Indies put up little fight. The West Indies selectors must be tempted to ask Gayle to consider staying on after the CWC.
