Jason Roy you are kidding me. What?! I mean. That might be one of the best shots I've ever seen.

Mitchell Starc pushes it full on leg stump and Roy picks it up and flicks it off the bottom of his bat with such force that the ball sails high over Nathan Lyon at wide fine leg.

A touch of the MS Dhoni helicopter shot to that. Remarkable.

I still think this pitch is better to bat on now than in the first hour.

  3. Eng 24-0published at 5.1 overs

That might get Jonny Bairstow going!

Width from Mitchell Starc and YJB stands tall to cut it firmly past point for four. Bad ball, dismissed emphatically.

Heavier, greyer clouds overhead now in Birmingham, sunnies being pushed up onto heads, the occasional blouson or sports jacket being reached for. No need to panic so far, no genuine threat of heavy stuff

England have played really nicely, they have leapt on any scoring opportunities but there was no real need from that last swing from Jason Roy. You are only chasing 224.

  7. Eng 19-0published at 5 overs

    Target 224

Jonny Bairstow isn't in the same flow as Jason Roy yet and wisely just tucks one off his hips for a single.

Roy then swivels it out to deep square leg for two.

Well now. Roy skips down the pitch at Jason Behrendorff but can't get a run as he drives along the ground to mid on. Not sure that's needed quite yet, Jason.

Oh I say! The second one was even better! A Jason Roy in full flow is very, very difficult to bowl at.

  10. Eng 16-0published at 4 overs

    Roy 11, Bairstow 4

Jason Roy punches a dreamy cover drive away for four more.

Just sublime. The sound it made off the bat! I'd have that for a morning alarm.

  11. Eng 12-0published at 3.2 overs

Jason Roy crisply clips Mitchell Starc away off his pads into a gap at mid-wicket for two.

    Good shot. Good running.

  12. Eng 10-0published at 3.1 overs

Jason Roy has just played an off-drive for four that should get every man, woman and child in England into cricket.

    Sumptuous.

More good news from today - the ECB say that during this World Cup a million schoolchildren have engaged with cricket.

    Stars of the future?

They say: "To help inspire the next generation to fall in love with cricket, partners and stakeholders across the game have worked on initiatives including Cricket World Cup Club Family Days, the Cricket World Cup Schools Programme and fan zone activations."

Have your kids got into cricket this summer?

  14. Eng 6-0published at 3 overs

    Target 224

Yeeeesh. Jonny Bairstow prods at one that Jason Behrendorff pushes across the right-hander instead of bringing back in.

    Lucky not to nick that.

Jeez. And again. Bairstow flays a loose drive at the last and misses.

    That's a maiden.

  15. Postpublished at 14:50 British Summer Time 11 July 2019

Jonny Bairstow isn't happy with a window and/or door that is open above the sight screen and it's taking a fair while to sort.

    Finally we're back under way...

  16. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

    Roy 1, Bairstow 4

Jason Roy firmly and confidently defends each time Mitchell Starc curves it back towards his pads.

Roy then tries to pull a ball that wasn't quite short enough and takes a 94mph blow to his stomach. Ouch.

Starc concedes a wide before Roy resolutely defends the last. Maker's name stuff. He could well play in the Ashes you know.

Half an hour of Jason Roy could put England in a great position. He doesn't seem to feel any pressure, if the ball is there he'll hit it. Just the chap to open the innings.

  20. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

    Target 224

Jonny Bairstow defends the last amid an appeal for lbw.

Hang on - that actually did hit the pad before the bat.

Only a couple of Aussies appealed and they didn't even think about a review.

Replays show it would've been umpire's call on off stump so Bairstow would've survived.
