I don't quite know what to do with myself now - I need to watch that all back. It was a heady blur.

9 March 2015 - England are knocked out of the World Cup in the group stage by Bangladesh after a dismal campaign.

14 July 2019 - England, the world number one ODI side, lift the men's World Cup for the first time.

A stunning turnaround, given a staggering ending.

It has been a pleasure to cover this reinvigorated side over the last four years.

    Here it is.

Martin Guptill clips off his pads, goes for the second, Jason Roy fires in a stunning throw and Jos Buttler breaks the stumps with Guptill short of his ground.

A tied match. A tied Super Over. England win on a rule cricket's lawmakers thought would never be used.

England's men win their first World Cup by the tightest of margins.

    Ebb. Flow. Heart. Racing.

Jimmy Neesham looked to have won it for New Zealand with this almighty six off Jofra Archer.

The Black Caps needed five from three balls.

    Then three from two.

Then two from one. A single off the last would give England victory because they had hit more boundaries throughout the game.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler smacked 15 off Trent Boult in England's Super Over.

New Zealand needed 16 to win.

    Jofra Archer, come on down.

England need two from the last ball.

They only got one to tie.

    SUPER OVER IT IS THEN.

  7. Postpublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 14 July 2019

Then two astonishing, breathtaking, pieces of fortune went England's way.

First, Trent Boult lost his balance and trod on the boundary rope after catching a Ben Stokes skier.

Then one of the most insane things in cricket history as a throw in from the boundary rebounded off Stokes bat as he dived in and ran away for four.

Liam Plunkett hit some crucial shots to drag England back into it - needing 24 from 12 balls - before he too was dismissed...

But then Jos Buttler fell, soon followed by Chris Woakes to swing the final New Zealand's way...

But Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes stood tall, sharing a vital stand of 110 to put England on top.

But Jason Roy did fall cheaply.

And then Joe Root played an uncharacteristically jittery innings to make just seven.

It got worse - Jonny Bairstow chopped on for 36 and Eoin Morgan was caught brilliantly by Lockie Ferguson to leave England rocking on 86-4...

  12. Postpublished at 20:50 British Summer Time 14 July 2019

On a tricky pitch, New Zealand found a way to amass 241-8, thanks to 55 from Henry Nicholls, 47 from Tom Latham and a few other handy contributions.

England needed 242 to win the 2019 men's cricket World Cup.

And the very first ball gave hint of the drama to come - Jason Roy surviving a tight lbw review...

Let's have a look back at one of the most incredible matches in cricket history then...

More from Kane Williamson: "What did they win it on, boundaries? While the emotions are raw it's pretty hard to swallow when two teams work so hard to get to this moment in time. We had two attempts to separate us and still couldn't - it is what it is, the rules are there at the start and they probably never thought they would have to use them."

    BBC Test Match Special

England all-rounder Moeen Ali: "Unbelievable. The best final I've ever seen, the best game I've ever seen. Jos and Stokesy were ridiculous today. This has changed cricket in our country.

England leg-spinner Adil Rashid: "I was nervous coming out to bat but we had quality players out there who got us over the line."

  17. Postpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 14 July 2019

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "Gutted, obviously. We put in a huge amount of work to get to the final and to pretty much do all we could. Small margins. I have spoken a lot about uncontrollables and there were a couple today which were hard to swallow. England are deserved winners, take nothing away from them. It's one of those things, eh.

"The margins are so small but what you walk away with is the amount of heart that the guys have shown throughout the campaign."

More from Liam Plunkett on being left out earlier in the tournament: "You have to stay positive, I've played a lot in the last few years and knew I could get into the 11. People like Tom Curran missed the entire World Cup and he's a fine player.

"You can be angry inside but you can't put it on the team. I got some wickets against India and played my way in."

  19. 'I hope we have inspired people to play'published at 20:36 British Summer Time 14 July 2019

    BBC Test Match Special

England all-rounder Ben Stokes: "I don't know what it is about finals that produce moments like that. It's incredible. Amazing.

"We will find out tomorrow what it's done for cricket - we've always had great support. The game was ebbing and flowing, I hope we have inspired people to want to do this in the future.

"It just shows if your batters are there at the end everything is possible."

Liam Plunkett on Jofra Archer: "While we were batting in the super over he was warming up, a bit like baseball with the bullpen.

"He's a freak of a talent. We were practicising our knuckle balls at the start of the tournament - me to try and use in two years, but he got Maxwell with it in the semi-final!"
