  2. Somerset clear deficitpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Somerset 171 & 53-4 v Kent 209 - tea

Somerset have cleared their first-innings deficit against Kent, but their remaining batsmen have a lot of work to do after the first four wickets went with only 32 on the board.

Marcues Trescothick, Azhar Ali and James Hildreth only managed a combined nine runs between them but Tom Abell (14 not out) and Steven Davies (13) have put them 15 ahead at tea.

Kent must be fancying their chances of a win - but they didn;t find batting easy in their first innings either, so they won't want to chase too many.

  3. wicket

WICKET Browne lbw Barker 7published at 16:05 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 14-1

Alastair Cook collects his first boundary of the Essex innings with a checked drive down the ground - but it's a good job Fidel Edwards didn't move to his right after letting the ball go or that would have been a caught and bowled chance.

Nick Browne, though, goes cheaply as Keith Barker brings one back past his defensive push and strikes him on the back pad. The decision is a formality for the umpire.

  4. Leicestershire looking good at Hovepublished at 15:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Sussex 173 & 308 v Leicestershire 252 & 99-1

Leicestershire are well on course to start the season with a win at Hove after being set a target of 230 by Sussex.

Paul Horton hit a 79-ball half-century and is 53 not out, sharing an unbroken stand of 72 with Championship newcomer Hasan Azad, who has 27.

The home side were all out for 308 earlier in the day, with Colin Ackermann taking 5-69 and Tom Taylor 4-75, the latter returning match figures of 10-122.

  5. Notts batting Yorkshire out of itpublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 160-2 v Yorkshire 291

    Dave Bracegirdle
    BBC Radio Nottingham commentator

Nottinghamshire made healthy progress on the third afternoon against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge.

The home side, holding a first innings advantage of 117, reached tea on 160-2, second time around.

Ben Duckett made 61 before falling to a catch by Adam Lyth at slip off Duanne Olivier. Duckett had reached 50 from only 52 deliveries.

Chris Nash then reached his own half-century from 104 balls and was unbeaten on 60 at the break, with Joe Clarke on 28.

  6. Hampshire enforce follow-onpublished at 15:55 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 & 0-0

The follow-on decision was a formality for Hampshire skipper James Vince, with his side 361 ahead.

So we have the sight of Sir Alastair Cook walking out for the second time today, having been caught by Vince for 50 during the morning session.

Remember, Hampshire only need nine wickets to win because injured Adam Wheater is unlikely to bat.

  7. Edwards burst rocks Essexpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164 - tea

    Kevan James
    BBC Radio Solent commentator

He might be 37 and so laid-back, he's horizontal, but Fidel Edwards still has it.

Hampshire's top wicket-taker with 54 last season, here he is taking 5-51 in the Essex first innings, with the wicked yorker is as potent as ever, as Messrs Lawrence, Harmer and Quinn will testify.

Fidel may conserve some energy during spells, unleashing the odd quick ball from time to time, but few are more skilful or as quick.

He still loves a wicket, and every team needs a Fidel, Hampshire are the lucky ones.

    Somerset 171 & 32-4 v Kent 209

Matt Milnes picks up Eddie Byrom's wicket for the second time in the game, as the left-hander pushes at an angled delivery and edge to the keeper. Somerset are still six short of clearing the first-innings deficit as Steven Davies walks out to bat.

    Northamptonshire 445 v Middlesex 271 & 45-2

An early tea is to be taken at Wantage Road after rain forced the players off the field with Northamptonshire seeking to press home their advantage. They lead by 129 with Nick Gubbins and Stevie Eskinazi both falling to Nathan Buck in Middlesex's second innings, after the paceman took five in their first.

  10. 50 runs

for Chris Nashpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 151-2 v Yorkshire 291

Successive boundaries for Chris Nash - a cover drive and then a similar shot a little more square - off the bowling of Matthew Waite left the Notts batsman on the verge of his half-century about 10 minutes ago.

He had to wait a little while, but duly reaches it by steering a shot into the offside and running through for two.

It's taken him 104 balls to get there - a good patient knock.

  11. Mixed emotions for Critchleypublished at 15:36 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Derbyshire 197 & 284-7 v Durham 171

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Newcastle commentator

Matt Critchley became the second Derbyshire batsman to reach 50, but a run later he was heading back to the pavilion, lbw to Chris Rushworth playing across the line.

Critchley could have gone on exactly 50 but Michael Richardson couldn’t hold onto a chance which skied up into the air off Gareth Harte’s bowling and came down over his shoulder Maybe Richardson was put off by the glare?

Harvey Hosein has also gone now for 78 but the lead is 310.

  12. 6 runs

Bopara goes aerialpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 164

Looks like Ravi Bopara is determined to have a bit of fun out there while the Essex innings lasts.

He effortlessly hoists spinner Liam Dawson for six over square leg with sublime timing and then clears cover with another magnificent stroke to add four more.

Bopara is 37 not out, but loses partner Matt Quinn in the next over, lbw to Fidel Edwards for a duck - and that's a five-for for the Hampshire fast bowler (5-51).

With Adam Wheater unable to bat because of his thumb injury - the Essex first innings is done.

  13. Nash survives shoutpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 137-2 v Yorkshire 291

Matthew Waite makes an impressive start to his spell. The Yorkshire seamer is adamant he's got rid of Chris Nash when the Notts batsman is pinned bang in front just below the knee roll.

It looks for all the world that he's out, but the man who counts says there was an inside edge. The over ends with another lbw appeal, this time half-hearted against Joe Clarke as it's too high.

    Good stuff from Waite though.

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 154-8

    Keith BarkerImage source, Rex Features

Two in two overs for Keith Barker as Sam Cook plays across the line and is leg-before. Ravi Bopara is still there on 27, but it would take miraculous batting from him now to get Essex anywehere near the follow-on target.

  15. rain stops play

Rain delay at Northamptonpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Northamptonshire 445 v Middlesex 271 & 45-2

Good news for Middlesex as the weather closes in at Wantage Road. They need another 129 to make Northants bat again, with Sam Robson 21 not out and Dawid Malan on 16.

  16. Clarke continuing formpublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Notts 408 & 124-2 v Yorkshire 291

Yorkshire will have hoped the dismissal of Nottinghamshire's Ben Duckett could trigger a flurry of wickets. It hasn't.

Fresh from his first-innings century Joe Clarke has continued that form by quickly moving on to 18, helped by cover-drive boundaries off Duanne Olivier and Joe Root.

Chris Nash (34 not out) is chugging along in an unflustered manner, happy to leave plenty.

Yorkshire bring on Matthew Waite for his first bowl of the second innings to try and somehow stay in this game.

Notts' lead is already 241 runs.

WICKET Porter lbw Barker 17published at 15:17 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 152-6

After taking 360 first-class wickets during his time with Warwickshire, left-arm paceman Keith Barker has his first for Hampshire. Bowling round the wicket he strikes Jamie Porter on the pads as the Essex batsman attempts some sort of lofted leg-side shot that was surely unwise in the circumstances.

    Somerset 171 & 17-3 v Kent 209

    Azhar AliImage source, Rex Features

Azhar Ali plays a defensive stroke with a slightly angled bat and that proves to be his undoing as the ball flies off the edge to third slip. Somerset are still 21 short of clearing the first-innings deficit with their top three gone.

  19. Porter finds the boundarypublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

    Hampshire 525-8 dec v Essex 147-6

Jamie Porter breaks the shackles by clouting Gareth Berg over mid-wicket for four and steers the next ball away past the slips for another boundary. It takes him to 14 not out and Ravi Bopara has 24 at the other end. Essex, though, are still deep in trouble, 378 behind.

  20. Division Two round-uppublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 7 April 2019

Leicestershire have lost their first wicket as they look to score 230 to beat Sussex, but Paul Horton is still there on 26 not out and they are 47-1.

Sam Robson and Dawid Malan are trying to rebuild for Middlesex, who are 36-2 at Northampton after following on, still 138 short of avoiding an innings defeat.

Derbyshire are now 280 in front against Durham, with Harvey Hosein (55 not out) and Matt Critchley (34 not out) carrying them to 254-5 in their second innings.
