Another round of County Championship action is done and dusted and hard though it is to believe, there are only six games remaining for the eight teams in Division One.

Somerset's sixth win keeps them at the head of the pack, with Essex in hot pursuit, and Yorkshire are also in contention following their dramatic late win over 2018 champions Surrey, who surely now have too much to do with a 62-point gap to close on the leaders.

Plenty of great individual performances to remember from the likes of Warwickshire's Dom Sibley (a career-best 244, the highest Championship score this season), Marnus Labuschagne (106 and 100), Brett D'Oliviera (nine wickets and 103) and there were centuries for England hopefuls Dawid Malan (199) and Mark Stoneman (100).

It's turned six o'clock and they've suddenly decided to shake hands on a draw at Sedbergh.

So no century for Cameron Bancroft, but his match-saving second-innings 92 is the highest score of a marvellous first-ever first-class match on this most stunningly picturesque of grounds.

Even England star Jimmy Anderson, despite his calf injury yesterday, had only good things to say about the place, along with all the other players - and media. "It was an honour to cover a game in such beautiful surroundings," said Martin Emmerson from BBC Newcastle. And it's a safe bet that Lancy will be back.

Second-placed Lancashire, who an only wonder what might have happened with a fit Anderson, take 11 points from the draw, to Durham's nine.

The Red Rose, who have a game on hand on Glamorgan, move back within three points of the leaders.

As for the congested eight-team scrap for the third promotion place, Durham now stand 8th, four points ahead of the new bottom club Middlesex - but only 23 points adrift of Sussex, in third.

Lancashire are in Championship action again on Sunday, when they head to Wantage Road to face fifth-placed Northants, while Durham are also in the East Midlands at Grace Road against ninth-placed Leicestershire.

This match-saving effort is certainly worthy of a century.

Duanne Olivier comes up for his final over of the game and finds the edge with his first delivery, but it falls short of gully.

His second tempts Surrey number 11 Gareth Batty into a drive and this time Adam Lyth takes the catch at second slip and Yorkshire have a dramatic victory with just 10 balls to spare.

Having been 136-1 at one stage, Surrey lost seven wickets for 23 runs and although teenager Jamie Smith battled away for almost two hours for an unbeaten 24 not out, his more experienced team-mates were unable to see the job through with him.

Yorkshire take 22 points from the game and Surrey six.

Ben Coad has three slips and two gullies in place.

The Yorkshire paceman has 18-year-old Jamie Smith in his sights.

Smith leaves anything he doesn't absolutely have to play and it's a maiden.

Just two overs - 12 balls - stand between Surrey and a draw.

Two appeals by Keshav Maharaj in his latest over to Gareth Batty. Nothing doing from the umpire. Six to go.

We're unlikely to ever know if rival skippers Dane Vilas and Cameron Bancroft had any sort of private wager as to who might get the most runs in this match.

But Bancroft, after following his first-innings score of 77 with 84 so far second time around, has now outstripped the 72 and 85 made by Vilas. The bottom line is that these two internationals have stood out like beacons in this game. And it's the Australian who just shades the South African.

Better than that, Bancroft's 83 is the highest score made by any batsman against Lancashire this season, improving on the 82 made by Miles Hammond for Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College back in May. That says a lot about the quality of pitches at the top schools.

Nottinghamshire head coach Peter Moores has been speaking after the county's heavy innings defeat by Essex left them in deep trouble at the foot of Division One, 33 points adrift of Warwickshire.

"We've got to score more runs to create more pressure. We've got to bat for longer and put more on the board for our bowlers to play with," he told BBC East Midlands Today's Colin Hazelden.

"The key is to get 11 guys on the field who you feel are the best team to get more out of the game.

"When you lose games, you feel it personally. Losing is painful and it sticks to you. You find it hard to take.

"But you have to find ways to dust yourself down and get up for the challenge. We'll be ready for what's ahead next week against Somerset."

No joy for Yorkshire, though, as Batty plays out a maiden over. His 18-year-old partner Jamie Smith is on 24 not out.
