Chris Woakes is bowling stump to stump at Steve Smith but Smith, a master of the unorthodox batting positions, manages to whip and nurdle the odd single here and there.
Woakes whistles down a bouncer to end the over.

If Joe Root is being sparing with James Anderson because of his calf injury, that is not a good recipe. If you're not confident he can bowl 20 overs in the day, then he shouldn't be playing.
Chris Woakes is back.
I think we've done well to get to 12:55 before the early morning optimism completely disappeared.

This is looking ominous. Pitch looking flat, England have selected four right handed, 80-85mph bowlers again. With Woakes being similar to the others surely Sam Curran should have been selected having played so well last Summer. He picked up key wickets and made significant contributions with the bat against India.

With five minutes to go until lunch, Steve Smith isn't going to do anything drastic.
He pounces on a loosener from Moeen Ali, stepping forward and thumping three runs away through cover.

Stuart Broad is maybe just trying to impart some wisdom to Ben Stokes about how to bowl to this pair.
Stuart Broad has jogged over for a chat with Ben Stokes after that over.
Jimmy Anderson did have some treatment on his bowling hand earlier. Maybe that explains why Joe Root hasn't turned to him yet?

Josh Cooper: Am I the only one terrified Jimmy is injured? Why is he not bowling?

Two dot balls end this Ben Stokes over.

This is rubbish from Ben Stokes.
Short from Stokes and Smith is on it in a flashing, pulling from up high, and he gets a couple of runs as it's chased down on the boundary edge.
Stokes goes fuller but it's a bit too on the pads, and he's whipped away for a leisurely two by Travis Head.

Thanks Jack. I spent 10 minutes trying to get it to work, in vain, then remembered my boss isn't in today!

Travis Head once had a spell with Ventnor CC on the Isle of Wight.
Smith 15, Head 24
Steve Smith sees a clubbing drive at Moeen cut off by the fielder at mid-off, before another flaying stroke is stopped by Joe Root at cover.
Then a whip from Smith, as conventionally elegant as he gets, twirls and swirls away for a single.
England could do with another of these...

Runs are galloping and the momentum is going to Australia now. England need to get a grip of this.
Stokes is all over the place. He might get a wicket because he can bowl good balls but, unlike Broad or Anderson, he gives up plenty of runs in between.
Now that's a better ball from Stokes, eliciting an "oomph" from Travis Head as he's struck on the pad, but that's too high for any lbw appeal, and Stokes stops his in his tracks.
Seven from the over...
