Australia were dismissed for 284 and England openers Rory Burns and Jason Roy safely negotiated two overs to end on 10-0.

England will resume on day two of the first Test trailing Australia by 274.

Stuart Broad finally ended Steve Smith's resilient knock of 144 to complete his own five-wicket haul and his 100th Ashes wicket.

A tremendous effort, not least given England were a bowler down after James Anderson's injury.

But with his side in the mire, Steve Smith played one of the great Ashes innings, ably supported by Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon.

Whatever you think of Smith, he's one of the greats...

Australia captain Tim Paine played not the 16th, but the first worst shot of the day.

James Pattinson was out lbw to one that missing the stumps (on brand for this day).

And then Pat Cummins was very, very plumb, leaving Australia reeling on 122-8.

Australia rebuilt to reach lunch at 83-3 but Chris Woakes struck shortly after the resumption to remove Travis Head.

Stuart Broad thought he had Steve Smith out for 34 but the Aussies successfully overturned it on review.

And then England successfully overturned the decision not to give Matthew Wade out lbw to a peach from Woakes...

Cameron Bancroft, also making his Test return after his ban for his part in the ball-tampering scandal, showed terrible technique and duly fell cheaply...

Australia won the toss and opted to bat.

David Warner - booed to the crease, of course - was here for an eventful time, not a long time.

He survived when England didn't review. Survived when they did. But didn't survive when he didn't review and would've done if he had - got that?

England needing 85 to avoid the follow-on is hilarious.

Anyway, let's have a look back at all the highlights of an enthralling day of Test cricket...

Who knows? Jimmy may have bowled those first few overs, the body is protecting itself, you feel fine, then in that fourth over the body just relaxed and bang, he felt it. I've done that before.

Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

In hindsight maybe Jimmy should have played last week to see if his legs could stand up to a Test match but these things happen. You can point to the medical team and to Jimmy saying 'why didn't you say you weren't fit' but you don't know until you are out there.

It is cricket. It is sport. England have got to cope with it. England's batsmen have to bat all day tomorrow.

It is massive blow to England. Jimmy Anderson should have played last week. For all the bowling in the nets it doesn't replicate a game.

Jimmy's injury has given guys an opportunity to put their hands up. But when you've got an experienced bowler, one of the best of all time - and in home conditions there is no-one better in the world - it's a huge blow.

The Anderson injury is a massive turning point in this series. It looks like he won't be available for a few weeks. I think that is a massive sway in this series.

    Right. Let's talk about Jimmy.

England might be without their all-time leading wicket-taker for more than just the rest of this Test now.

A very nervy wait for the results of those scans on his right calf.

Jofra Archer's emergence could be a saving grace. This situation would've been much worse not long ago.

William Tomaney: IMO people aren’t booing the innings and I don’t think it’s even personal. People are booing the situation because it feels like an injustice - what message does it send about the consequences of cheating?

To see people booing when Smith got a hundred is a bit disappointing but that is the way it goes.

Kase Mith: I am gradually coming round to the opinion that people booing Smith after that are an embarrassment to our nation.
