There was a bit of desperation in that shot from Travis Head but he'll be relieved to get off the mark.

  2. Aus 39-3published at 18.4 overs

Pat Cummins appears to be drinking cup a soup to keep himself warm. Surely he's been in England long enough now to know that this is as warm as it gets?

Travis Head gets himself off the mark with a bit of a heave, swiping at a wide delivery from Chris Woakes, and toe-ending it down the ground or a couple.

Matthew Wade has been in form and scoring runs so he deserves the opportunity as a specialist bat. He's a tough character as well so perhaps Australia thought they needed a bit more of that in the team.

Ben Stokes pings another filthy delivery down the leg side and then he produces a big inswinger that might have had Smith in trouble had it not been about three foot too wide.

Steve Smith was the only Australian to come down yesterday for extra practice, which sums him up.

  7. Aus 37-3published at 17.1 overs

    Ooft!

Steve Smith has a huge swing at the air in frustration as he's drawn into a push outside his off stump by Ben Stokes. He's furious with himself! It must be so draining, surely, to be so into and so emotionally involved in every delivery.

Amid all of the madness, din, fancy dress and goading of the Hollies, on the very back row is a mother breastfeeding a tiny baby. It can't be more than a few weeks old. Beautiful.

Bob Willis is another familiar face in the crowd. Arms folded, cheeks jutted out, looking thoroughly unimpressed as ever. I model my own resting face on his.

A Steve Smith single is all that this over costs.

Ben Stokes tests out Travis Head with a short ball and he sways out of the way, before he watches a horrible delivery go spiralling down the leg side from Stokes.

Eurgh. Stokes' radar has gone several shades of wonky. Back-to-back deliveries go flying down the leg side, and only some agility from Jonny Bairstow behind the stumps stops them rolling away for byes.

I think it might be a little while before we see James Anderson again. Chris Woakes has just taken a wicket and Ben Stokes has just started his spell.

I said to m'colleague today that someone would be 30-3 at some point in this Test.

I'll be honest, I didn't think it'd be Australia; and I didn't think it would be 75 minutes into the Test after they won the toss and opted to bat.

A special mention for Ben Stokes, who had the most spectacular appeal for that caught behind shout. He came charging forward, hips thrust out, hands above his head, and looked amazed when it was given.

A big wicket - Usman Khawaja was looking comfortable. The ball has moved around a bit but it's been quite slow and I thought Australia were starting to build something there.

    Chris Woakes!

He beat Usman Khawaja with the first delivery of this over and this second one was even better. Khawaja was cramped for room, no foot movement, and the ball just kissed the outside edge as he tried to push forward in defence.
