  1. Aus 17-2published at 8 overs

The main thing I've learnt from watching Steve Smith over the past few months is his leaves have got even more elaborate. He's almost spinning the bat over his shoulder as he wanders out of his crease.

T Hat's 2-13 for Broad from his four overs this morning.

Steve Smith cracks his first ball on the bounce to the man at cover, which gets the crowd excited...

This is perfect for England to get Steve Smith out so soon. Thought it's probably best for Smith as well to get that first big boo out of the way early on.

For Australia to compete over here in these conditions, Smith at four is the key.

Plenty of boos for Steve Smith as he makes his way out at number four.

I have, genuinely, not heard anything like this before. First the reception for David Warner, now this.

This is poor batting. He could've left that ball easily.

    Bancroft c Root b Broad 8 (Aus 17-2)

    And now he's gone!

This is not a great bit of work from Cameron Bancroft. He'd been lining himself up nicely but this is a loose shot, camped on the back foot, pushing forward, and an outside edge goes low to Joe Root at first slip. It's a decent take from Root, actually, squatting and getting both hands under the ball before it hits the turf.

  7. Aus 17-1published at 7.1 overs

Stuart Broad is definitely trying to bowl fuller, but this is more of a half-volley than anything else, and it's drilled back past him by Cameron Bancroft for four.

Steve Smith never looks totally relaxed but he does, genuinely, look nervous up in the Australia dressing room. One foot tapping, eyes glued to the TV screen.

    Here's Stuart Broad.

The Hollies is crackling. Light a match and the whole place will go up. Men in golf skirts, kimonos, cops and convincts, bolwer hats and Nemo the fish. Warner was brutally dispatched, every run of Bancroft is booed. What might Steve Smith get?

That's the ball you will have to wait for as a batsman and try to capitalise on it. Otherwise you've got to do the hard yards.

  11. Aus 12-1published at 7 overs

    Anderson 4-3-1-0

Cameron Bancroft looks a touch more comfortable against James Anderson, although he's still absentmindedly strolling across those stumps every now and again.

A superb bit of work by Joe Denly at cover, launching himself to his left and sticking out a mitt, stops Bancroft driving a full Anderson ball away for four, before Bancroft adds another leg bye to the tally.

A lovely shot, a typical left-hander's stroke, just clipping it nicely off the pads.

  14. Aus 12-1published at 6 overs

    Khawaja 4, Bancroft 4

Cameron Bancroft strolls across his stumps but again, he gets enough pad on ball to nurdle a leg bye past short leg.

Usman Khawaja then opens his account with a lovely clip through mid-wicket, taking a Broad delivery off his pads and pushing it away for four.

Anyone new to cricket following the World Cup excitement might be rather confused right now... So far this morning there has been... 1 not out - not reviewed - was out 1 not out - reviewed - not out 1 out - not reviewed - not out.

Cameron Bancroft's first runs in this Ashes series is going to be a boundary!

It's full from Broad and Bancroft stands tall, punching it back down the ground for four. It's greeted by, er, mild applause from the crowd.

Leg-stump yorker might be the ball to Bancroft. He's walking a long way across his stumps.

  19. Aus 3-1published at 5 overs

Cameron Bancroft still doesn't look entirely comfortable as his head goes one way and his bat goes the other, but he's got enough pad on ball to stroll a leg bye.

Usman Khawaja, who always seems to be wearing about four extra layers whenever he bats in England, gets welcomed to the crease with a peach from Anderson that once again just nips past the outside edge.
